“Unless a holy man lays down his head for the sake of the poor Brahmins, there is no hope for their escape from imperial tyranny”
These were the words of a gentle holy man who fiercely fought against the atrocities of the Mughals over Hindus. He became the ninth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji. The brave Guru, who was a symbol of valor and conviction, was beheaded by the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb while protecting the religious faith of the non-Muslims in India. Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is an insignia of the martyrdom of this brave guru.
Located in Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi, the Sis Ganj Gurudwara was first established in the year 1783 to commemorate the persecution site of Guru Tegh Bahadur ji. It is one of the most important historical Gurudwaras in Delhi. The present structure of the holy shrine was constructed in the year 1930. It comprises of a huge spacious hall which has a bronze canopy right in the centre, under which the holy book, Shri Guru Granth Sahib is kept. The huge complex houses around 250 rooms and 200 lockers for the visitors who wish to stay there at night. The Gurudwara also provides modern facilities for its visitors from all over the world.
Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib holds great importance for the Sikhs all over the country. The trunk of the tree under which Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was martyred is still preserved inside the Gurudwara and so is the well from which he used to take bath while being in prison. Adjoining the Gurudwara is the Kotwali or the police station where he and his disciples were imprisoned and tortured. This historic Sikh Shrine draws faith of almost 15,000 devotees everyday. Long queues of tourists and devotees waiting to have “Langar” (community kitchen) can be seen everyday.
The sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahdur laid the foundation for the future of Sikhism in India. Gurudwara Sis Ganj Sahib is visited by people from all over the world who come here to seek blessings, attain peace and for the rejuvenation of the soul.
Quick Tips:
- Chandni Chowk Metro Station is the nearest to the Gurudwara. De-board the metro here and walk for a few minutes to reach the holy shrine.
- Take off your shoes and cover your head with a scarf or a handkerchief before entering the Gurudwara to respect the cultural beliefs.
- Do not refuse the Karah Parshad which is a blessing from the Guru.
- Don’t miss the Guru ka Langar served at the Gurudwara throughout the day.
- Visit the museum opposite the Gurudwara to know more about the history and establishment of this sacred place.
