A beautiful white structure, Jaswant Thada is among the notable architectural marvels of Jodhpur. Located near the famous Mehrangarh Fort, it is the royal cenotaph of the 33rd Rathore Ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The greatness of the ruler can be inferred from the flowers that are still offered at his shrine. Jaswant Thada is one of the most beautifully carved architectural jewels of the “sun city” of India. It also serves as a traditional crematorium for the rulers of Jodhpur.
The Jaswant Thada was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh, the son of Maharaja Jaswant Singh, in the year 1890. The entire complex has been erected as a temple using the Rajputana style of architecture. Finely polished marble stone with intricate carvings has been used in its construction. The white marble has been so impeccably polished that the entire structure emits a phenomenal glow upon the warm touch of the sunlight. A stupendous collection of sculptures, paintings and frescos adorn the interiors of this structure.
Around the temple-like structure, you can also locate some sculptured gazebos, a small lake and a multi-tiered garden that offer a perceptible view. The cenotaph also houses three other cenotaphs and two tombs in its vicinity. There is a small memorial to a peacock which accidently flew into a funeral fire. A mystic rocky-hill, with an arcadian look, paves way for this serenic epitome of exquisite architecture at Jodhpur.
