“Sarson key lehrate khet, makki ki roti, saag…”

These are all synonymous with our very dear state of Punjab. Jalandhar is among the oldest cities in Punjab and St Mary’s Cathedral is one of its key attractions. Located near Jalandhar Cantonment Station, this church is dedicated to St. Patrick and was initiated by the representatives of His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

The church was built in 1947 and was looked after by chaplains appointed by the Diocese of Lahore. Later, the church was demolished and rebuilt in 1987 when it got the status of Cathedral or Mother church of all churches in Punjab. It was inaugurated by Archbishop Jose Sanchez, special Envoy of the Pope and Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, the Vatican Ambassador.

The architecture of St. Mary’s Catherdral is unique and secular in character. It is interesting to note how the Punjabi elements are blending with the shades of varied cultures reflected in its structure and ambiance. With palms trees and greens on either side, the pathway to the main entrance is well maintained. ‘Rosary Villa’ is an open gallery showcasing the images of Christ and mother Mary, located within the Church’s compound. Beautiful marble fountains adorn the Villa. The main church is simple and has beautiful coloured windows.

Devotees and tourists visit the church to seek blessings and explore this splendorous structures that is one of its kind.
