A place with an exceptional photographic view, Prinsep Ghat was built during the British Raj on the banks of the Hooghly River. The people of Kolkata built this ghat in the memory of James Prinsep, a learned man who helped in deciphering Emperor Akbar’s Brahminical script.

Located on Strand Road, Prinsep Ghat is one of the most attractive sights in the city of Kolkata. Though the Ghat was constructed in the year 1841, it was opened to the public only in 1843. Greek and Gothic style of architecture was used to construct the monument. As a part of its renovation, a 2 km stretch of riverfront was built from the Prinsep Ghat to Baje Kadamtala Ghat in the year 2012. The stretch is beautified with illuminated gardens and pathways much popular amongst the couples and youngsters. To add on to the mesmerizing aura of the place, boat rides are also available along the river especially during the sunsets.

Prinsep Ghat is one of the most sought after recreational spot in Kolkata. The ghat is crowded with locals who spend hours sitting together in peace or making the most of the romantic boat rides. Princep Ghat also happens to be the location where the popular song ‘Piyu Bole’ from the movie Parineeta was shot. A number of street stalls, offering mouth-watering Jhal-muri, Pani-Puris and Pav-Bhaji are available, if hunger pangs strike you at this spot.
