Raj Ghat: The Black Marble Samadhi

Location: Mahatma Gandhi Marg, Ring Road, New Delhi

When we talk of Indian Independence, the first name that strikes the mind is that of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. The mahatma who led India to independence with his non-violent measures, was assassinated by an Indian Brahmin on January 30, 1948. Raj Ghat, the site where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated, commemorates his relentless effort and contribution towards India’s independence.

Located on the banks of the Yamuna River, Raj Ghat is a black-marble platform that marks the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi.  Though the samadhi is uncovered, it is enclosed by a brown stone-wall with Gandhi-ji’s sayings inscribed on it. A stone pathway that leads to the memorial runs along well-kept lawns. Gandhi-ji’s last words, “Hey Ram”, are inscribed on the black marble, which is decorated with yellow marigolds. An eternal flame, perpetually burning in one corner, pays homage to the father of Indian Independence.

Tourists from Indian and abroad are often seen offering flowers and garlands to the mahatma. Visitors are required to enter the memorial only after removing footwear, as symbol of respect. Prayers in the memory of Gandhi-ji are held every Friday, the day when he was assassinated. Special ceremonies are conducted on his birth and death anniversary. A Gandhi Memorial Museum, located at the Raj Ghat, features a film on his life and philosophies from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m., except on Thursdays. A number of trees, labeled with the names of the dignitaries who planted them, can also be seen at Raj Ghat.

A visit to the Raj Ghat is the best way to pay tribute to this iconic figure in the history of Indian Independence.
