Buddhism, an indigenous religion of the Indian sub-continent, is preached worldwide especially in countries like Nepal, Japan, Tibet, Thailand, Myanmar, etc. It encompasses the beliefs and practices established by the teachings of Lord Buddha. India, being the foundation place of the Buddhist philosophy of life, has a large number of religious places associated to this religion. One of the most important pilgrimage sites for the Buddhists all over the world is the Deer Park of Sarnath.

Located in Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath is one of the sacred places in India crucial for the followers of Buddhism. Sarnath derives its name from Sarangnath or the Deer God. The deer park at Sarnath is the place where Lord Buddha gave his first sermon or proclaimed Dharma and the original Sangha was created. According to Huien Tsang, the famous Chinese monk and world traveller, the deer park was developed by the Jataka King of Benaras. The history of this holy site dates back to 528 BC.

The Deer park is a huge enclosure made for the deer to roam around freely. The place also has an array of bird life. It is a heavenly place for those seeking solitude and peace away from their hectic lifestyle. The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Amidst the beautiful gardens and the relics of Buddhist monasteries and stupas, the deer park is a prominent tourist attraction in Sarnath.
