For study purposes, many students have to move into a new city or new country. In contrast, many students have the advantage of not moving out of their homes. It is mainly because of their campus location and convenient travelling. Many educational institutes, primarily universities, offer on-campus accommodation facilities for their students. However, some students choose to stay in hostels despite living in the same city where their campus is located to avoid travelling. Living off-campus means students are whether staying at their homes or residing in rentals, PGs or hostels outside which are not under their universities. And the institutions which offer accommodations within the campus boundaries are known as on-campus accommodation. Both of these accommodation options have advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of living on-campus:

It is safe; students moving out of their hometown or countries may face difficulties finding proper accommodation that is safe to reside in, especially for girls. Living on-campus comes along with excellent security.

No travelling. Students do not have to travel every day, which saves time, money and energy as well.

In case of any medical emergency, someone will always be there to help.

Students get the opportunity to meet more people outside their class.

No extra money required for services like internet/wifi, food, water etc.

Students get the opportunity to get involved in recreational activities, as there is no rush to go back home.

Take up responsibilities of self by doing small things by self.

Events and festivals get celebrated with friends.

Disadvantages of living on-campus:

There is restoration on entry and exit timing.

Do not get to meet parents whenever you want to.

Distractions; noise and sound coming from other students or rooms

Minimal privacy if sharing rooms.

It may be challenging to manage some expenses; for example, if you do not like the dorm food, you may have to buy it from outside frequently.

Charges of the hostel accommodation can be expensive.

Advantages of living off-campus: (whether at your own home or rental)

You are living in your own home with your family. (if not rental)

Freedom in terms of privacy and time restrictions.

You cook your meals, celebrate events and invite friends or family over.

You can join extra classes outside of the university.

There is an option of choosing roommates for PG’s or rentals in some cases.

Disadvantages of living off-campus:

If you choose to live in a rental or PG, it can be expensive; grocery shopping, cleaning, utility bills, internet/ wifi, travelling expenses etc.

Travelling to campus can be time-consuming and energy-consuming as well.

If you live in rentals, security may become a concern depending on the location.

Getting familiar with the area and directions can be problematic during the beginning.

Security can be an issue when you leave for holidays at home.

Accommodation choices should be made, keeping in mind the pros and cons. Some possible advantages and disadvantages an individual’s choice comes with are already known or guessed, so individuals should prepare those alternatives. One should decide to live, whether on-campus or off-campus, with the help of family members.

Education is a vital part of our lives.
