It can occur as a fetus, during delivery or after birth. For example, if a pregnant woman is affected by chickenpox or measles, there are high chances of brain damage to the developing fetus. In addition, a disruption in blood supply to the fetus could also cause cerebral palsy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Symptoms<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The symptoms of cerebral palsy are:<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Involuntary movements<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Difficulty in hearing or speaking<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dental deformities<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Delayed growth such as difficulty in walking or sitting up, sucking your thumb and problem in swallowing food.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Diagnosis<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brain scans or tests are conducted to check for any signs of brain damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Medical history checkup<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) for taking images of the brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">CT (computerized tomography) scan to get cross-sectional images of the brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Blood tests to rule out any other underlying problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Types of cerebral palsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Spastic Cerebral Palsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Muscles on one side of the body or both sides become stiff, and the child has difficulty moving.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Athetotic Cerebral Palsy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The entire body lacks control over actions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Treatment<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Therapy options<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Physical therapy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It involves muscle training and exercise. It helps a child develop coordination and balance as well as strength. In addition, essential activities such as using crutches, braces or a wheelchair are taught. These aid a child\u2019s movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speech therapy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Children are taught sign language as well as how to form words. They take more time than normal children to learn, so specifically trained professionals aid their education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Occupational therapy<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Children are taught everyday activities like holding a pencil, writing, reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Medication<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Muscle relaxants help reduce the stiffness in muscles.
