India has 28 states and eight union territories with a long list of folk dances. At every festival or celebration, these folk dances are practised.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What is folk dance?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Folk dance is made up of two different words: folk and dance. Here, it represents the people or an ordinary man. This means that folk dance is the dance by the common man. Generally, they are practised in groups more than individually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">These folk dances are performed during celebrations such as weddings, the arrival of seasons, especially rain, born day of a child, anniversaries, agricultural harvest and many other happy occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Each state of India has their folk dance based on the traditions and characteristics of each dance that make it unique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The list of folk dances is as follows:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Andhra Pradesh:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kuchipudi, Andhra Natyam, Dappu, Kolattam, Veeranatyam, Vilasini Natyam, Lambadi, Dhimsa and Butta bommalu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Arunachal Pradesh<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Chalo, Wancho, Pasi Kongki, Popir, bardo, and chham<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Assam:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bihu, Khel Gopal, Naga Dance, Jhumura Hobjanai, Bichhua, Maharas, Bagurumba, Natpuja, and Tabal Chongli.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bihar:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jata jatin, Bakho bakhain, panwaria, bidesiya, and sama chakwa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chhattisgarh:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chandaini, Charit, Raut Nacha, Pandwani, and Gaur Maria<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Goa:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0samayi nrutya, tonya mell, koli, dekhni, fugdi, shigmo, and tarangamel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gujarat<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Dandiya ras, Garba, Bhawai, and Tippani juriun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Haryana<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Jhumar, Phag, Daph, Dhamal, Loor, gagor, Khor, and Gugga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Himachal Pradesh<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Dangi, Nati, Dhaman, Jhora, Jhali, Chhapeli, Mahasu, and Chharhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jammu and Kashmir<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Kud dandi nach, Rauf, Damali, Hikat, and Mandjas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jharkhand<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: karma Munda, Agni, jhumar, phagua, Mundari dance, jhitka, danga, and ghora naach<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Karnataka<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">: Huttari, suggi, Yakshagan, Karga, and data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On an important note, India has two forms of dance. One is a folk dance, and the other is a classical dance. Many times, these terms are used interchangeably. But there is a minor difference between folk and classical dance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To learn the difference in detail, we must go through each of the basics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">What is classical dance?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Classical dance traces its origins to Natya Shastra.
