A place where everybody can live in peace and harmony, without discrimination and disputes. Sounds like a dream, right? Not really, because this heavenly place is ready to open its arms for you. Set in a lush green area close to the sea, Auroville is a universal township in the Villuppuram district of Tamil Nadu, open for people who want to live in peace and unity.

A vision of Mirra Alfassa, popularly known as “The Mother”, Auroville is meant to be an ideal place based on the principle of humanity. The project of such a town was put forward by the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry in the mid 1960s. After receiving blessings from The Mother, the concept was taken forth to the Government of India and then to the General Assembly of UNESCO. Their dream was realized in 1966, when UNESCO passed the unanimous resolution, giving a green flag to the making of this ideal township.

Auroville was inaugurated on February 28, 1968 in the presence of 5,000 people, with representatives from 124 nations. Aurovillians are people of all age-groups, belonging to all cultures and social classes representing the cross-section of humanity. The town, whose current population is around 2,160, can house up to 50,000 people. Auroville is open for people from any part of the globe who perpetuate the principle of humanity and unity. A four-point charter was passed at the inaugural ceremony of the project, which states the clear vision of integral living that the township follows.

In the heart of Auroville lies an outstanding architectural masterpiece, a temple for the Aurovillians. Matrimandir or the Temple of the Mother is like a ball-like structure plated with gold from outside. In the inner-most chamber of the Matrimandir, there is a 70 cm crystal sphere, which glows with a single beam of light that enters the chamber from the top of the structure. Peace chambers have been constructed inside the Matrimandir for people to meditate in peace and expand their consciousness.

Such is the sanctity this ideal township, which propagates the religion of humanity.
