Mutiny Memorial: A Symbol of the Revolt of 1857<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Over a century ago, when India was struggling under the British Raj, some brave hearted rose against the colonial rule and started what is now called the \u201cFirst battle of Independence\u201d. It wasn’t easy; thousands of soldiers lost their lives battling the cruel Britishers. Their heroism and sacrifice is what the Mutiny Memorial now commemorates.<\/p>\n

Located on the Rani Jhansi Road in Delhi, the memorial was originally constructed by the British to honor their officers and soldiers of the Delhi Field Force martyred in the uprising. On 15th August 1972, the 25th anniversary of India’s Independence, the Mutiny Memorial was converted into a reminiscent of the Indian Soldiers and was renamed as \u201cAjitgarh\u201d. The names of the martyrs of this first attempt against British subjugation were also etched at the memorial.<\/p>\n

The Mutiny Memorial is an octagonal tapering tower built in the Victorian Gothic Style. Rising 33 meters high from a two-tier platform, it has an ornamental facade made up of red sandstone and a staircase inside to reach its top. Surrounded by the lush greenery of the Kamla Nehru Ridge Forest, the memorial offers stupendous scenic beauty. Whether for its historical significance or for its splendid architecture or just for the sake of being haunted, people are seen crowding at the Mutiny Memorial, quite often.<\/p>\n
