Bhitarkanika is located in Odisha and is a home for crocodiles and other animals. It has a unique ecosystem. The area is known for its great variety of plants and animals. Keep reading to learn more about this exciting sanctuary and its inhabitants.

Exploring Bhitarkanika: A Natural Paradise

Did you know Bhitarkanika was designated a national park in 1998? Although Bhitarkanika covers an area of 672 square kilometres, only 145 square kilometres are allotted to the national park. The sanctuary is nestled along the banks of the Bramhani and Baitarani Rivers. It consists of low-lying floodplains and mangrove swamps, wandering rivers, and quiet mudflats. All these make up the different landscapes in this protected area. The park’s unique geography created many special habitats that support its rich diversity.

Mangroves: Guardians of Bhitarkanika

At the heart of Bhitarkanika is a busy mangrove world. Its thick green forests line the riverbanks and coasts. You see wind-bent trees everywhere. Mangroves on the shores help stabilise land, including sea grasses that provide beds for many big hunters and nurseries for large sea animals. Did you know Bhitarkanika has over 60 kinds of mangroves? These include Aegiceras corniculatum and Avicennia officinalis. The tall, twisted roots of mangroves give crocodiles, birds and other creatures a good home to find food and shelter. This park’s rich variety would not exist without its mangroves.

Crocodiles: Lords of the Waters

What kind of wildlife would lure you into the dense mangrove swamps of Bhitarkanika? The scary saltwater crocodile. The park is home to over 1,600 crocodiles and is one of India’s best places to see crocodiles. Some crocodiles here are even more significant than 7 meters. Did you know that the park also hosts one of the world’s largest breeding populations of saltwater crocodiles? Mother crocs along the riverbanks zealously guard nests holding hundreds of hatchlings that emerge yearly. By conserving these crocodiles and their habitat, Bhitarkanika plays a key role in ensuring the species survives for future generations.

Beyond Crocodiles: Bhitarkanika’s Diverse Wildlife

Now, Bhitarkanika is not only about crocodiles. You can also see wild boars, spotted deer, and monkeys, among other mammals. They roam in dense forests or come out from reed-filled clearings to drink. The park has also reported over 300 bird species. Many are rare migrants, and there are as many as eight types of kingfishers. It is a nesting site for the endangered Olive Ridley sea turtle, particularly at the Gahirmatha beach. Will you spot a grand or aquatic otter swimming near your boat? Bhitarkanika’s mangrove creeks and forests are home to immense diversity of life.

Exploring Bhitarkanika’s Rich Biodiversity

You may come across the reticulated python, king cobra and other fascinating reptiles that add to the diversity of reptile life in the area. As you wind between mangrove roots or rest on the bank, these reptiles are an exciting sign of the park’s vibrant ecosystem. Every habitat in Bhitarkanika, from swampland to shoreline, supports different living things. These life forms rely on the continued existence of this protected area. Its status as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance demonstrates the value we should place on preserving areas like these.

Preservation Efforts: Safeguarding Bhitarkanika’s Ecosystem

Bhitarkanika reminds us of the ever-lively natural world supported by its intricate habitats and the associations among species.
