We wake up to head for work, shower, wear fresh, clean clothes, and then look in the mirror to groom ourselves and ensure we are presentable. While glancing in the mirror, you may see yourself and focus on specific aspects of your body, be it weight, height, shape, or size of a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certain<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> body part, and think that you are either proud of it or reluctant to show it to the world. This perception of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> physical appearance is called body image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, body image is not just limited to physical attributes but also emotional responses to physical <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">attributes<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Body image is an <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">important<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> part of us as it assists in moulding our mental health and overall well-being. It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is further divided<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> into two parts: positive and negative. Positive body image implies the acceptance and satisfaction of oneself towards <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> body. On the contrary, negative body image means the person is unhappy with what they have and is willing to be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Understanding the interplay between body image and mental health will help us develop better techniques to promote holistic well-being. This article will explore this relationship and discuss several aspects that influence this dynamic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Understanding Body Image<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Understanding body image is essential because it helps us identify how we perceive ourselves and how this impacts our mental health. Body image refers to our thoughts and feelings about our physical appearance when we look at a mirror or reflect on ourselves. This perception can be affected by societal standards, media, and subjective or personal experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">As mentioned above, body image can be positive or negative. Positive body image <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is characterised<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by the appreciation of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one\u2019s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> own body. The physical attributes are immaterial here. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> leads to the person feeling more positive, supporting <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his\/her<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> mental health. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the contrary, negative body image <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is characterised<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by dissatisfaction with <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> body and appearance. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The person might compare themselves with others or feel embarrassed or uncomfortable with their body. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> leads to a negative connotation of oneself. Young teenagers, children, and adults spend much time on social media. People come across different <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">photos<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of celebrities or fitness models, which leads them to think if they can also attain a similar body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, this may <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> be possible for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">everyone<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The inability to reach this superficial goal may lead to dissatisfaction, contributing to a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">person&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> negative perception of their body.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Friends and Family Dynamic\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In an <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">individual&#8217;s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> lifetime, they may encounter several people who stay with them as friends. However, certain people have been with them since birth, or, in other words, their family. People who negatively perceive their bodies tend to develop depression or anxiety. So, if someone develops a negative image or is in the process of developing one, timely intervention can he<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">lp. Such interventions often include therapeutic approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is renowned for improving self-esteem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Further, it is important to educate people regarding body positivity. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will help reduce the stigma associated with diverse body types. Promoting self<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">-compassi<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on and proper media usage can also help individuals have a healthy self-ima<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it is essential for us to be<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fit and healthy, certain fitness levels exist. One cannot attain any level of fitness. There are certain factors behind it.
