Due to historical, cultural and political factors, some countries would split across geographical boundaries, and as a result, they span two continents. Such countries are often natural bridges between the two regions and cater to a distinctive blend of traditions, people, language and culture and have an impact on the relationship between the two geographical regions, even with cuisine and architecture.

Russia

Much of Russia lies in Asia to the east of the Ural Mountains. It is inhabited primarily by people in the western section (European) of the state. It is a country through which passes the boundary of Europe and Asia. It has a European base (Europe is the largest continent by population), but it is spread across two continents. In this culture, the fusion of tastes, patterns and customs of both sides is evident. It is the largest country in terms of size, the largest transcontinental country. East and west, their roads run side by side; Old languages echo in the streets, yet there are old voices that seem so familiar. One place that’s been moulded by hard winters, has a long history, and is different from another place that’s warmed by sea winds and new rhythms. Not only land that is fused together, but the styles of life mix together without any naming. A nation that covers maps is balanced in difference.

Turkey

Here is the place where East meets West in one country. The part of Turkey that is in Europe, with Istanbul among them, and the part in Asia. Water ploughs through land right there; the thin Bosphorus is the gap between continents. After all, thousands of years have passed, and people still travel between worlds on this earth. Old Asian traditions blend in unobtrusively with new European ones. Where cultures cross, history flows. Even though things are moving gradually, tradition remains strong. Its strategic location on major trade routes influenced the flow of trade and the balance of power in the region for hundreds of years. Consider it a boisterous intersection of East and West, centuries before the modern-day boundaries.

Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is the largest landlocked country in the world. On the other side of the Ural lies a narrow strip, designated as European, while the rest is firmly in Central Asia. Urban capes, expansive grasslands, follow the edges of urban populations, and traditions of centuries on horseback are still alive today. The location facilitates the transport of oil, merchandise and human beings. It connects remote areas simply by its location. Imagine it as a silent joint between two continents, locked by its magnitude.

Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is located at the border of the eastern and western European regions. To the north, the ruggedness of the Greater Caucasus sets a boundary; some say this part of the world is Europe. The capital, Baku, is set along the waters of the Caspian Sea, with glass towers peeking out from the echoes of centuries-old Islamic design and old Persian courtyards. It is seeped with oil, and its economy is closely intertwined with energy lines from Asia to Europe. There are two worlds here, this corner by the sea, not at war, but coexisting in silence.

Georgia

Georgia is located between two continents, Europe and Asia, in an enchanted land of mountains. There are bits down south and east that have Asian rhythms, although many would say that they are European. Here are towering peaks, stone churches carved centuries ago and vines that have nourished the art of winemaking since before records began. Paths of geography and desire brought empires across. A plot of land, taking on the quiet sound of the west and the east, and not choosing either.

Egypt

The land to the east of the Suez Canal slopes up into the Sinai Peninsula. This part is Asian! Egypt is quite large, covering much of Africa, and lying out in the hot sun. Cairo, its capital, lies on the land of Africa, but its voice is heard from afar on the land of Asia. Every day, ships pass through the canal, connecting the seas without stopping. History doesn’t discriminate between continents here. Roots of the past wind between Africa and Asia like threads in fabric.

Indonesia

From Asian shores to Oceanic waters, Indonesia boasts the largest number of islands in the world. The big ones are predominantly Asian, Sumatra, Java and some parts of Borneo. But, further east, where Papua is located, the terrain turns to what’s considered Oceania. The split makes it a unique blend, neither all one nor all the others. Here are many voices, many people, many things not found elsewhere in the world. It’s almost as though it’s a never-ending land bridge connecting two continents.

Panama

A slice of earth in Central America that joins North and South by land. In between, the canal is a massive human design, connecting Atlantic waters to Pacific waters. More than a hundred years ago, its location on the map made the country a crossroads of world commerce. Sounds, tastes and rhythms here echo across both continents. A thin space in between two worlds, quietly binding them together.

Armenia

Armenia is the bridge to two continents, but sits high in the South Caucasus, unofficially. Most of its territory is part of Western Asia, yet it is part of the European world in terms of culture and politics. The ancient Christian land has a long tradition of centuries. Formed by the mountains, it bears traces of European and Asian landscapes.

France

France is a significant transcontinental nation, possessing land on two continents, Europe and South America. All of metropolitan France is located in Europe, while French Guiana, situated in South America, is an overseas department and the European Union’s largest outermost region. And, France also holds several overseas territories in the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific, helping it have a truly global reach. Like a European power, with a presence on the other side of the globe.

Why These Countries Matter

The majority of these ten countries span continents in bizarre ways. Boundaries have a tendency to follow power, rather than landscapes. One is an individual who connects far-off areas by movement, exchange, and daily connection. As defined by place, the influence of neighbours squeezed tight, routes that go through, decisions that reverberate far and wide. History is a part of daily life when a country is in two worlds. In clear sight, you will appreciate the importance of place, even in these modern times.

For some countries, two continents are just not enough.
