They are not only formed by the motion of the earth, but by daring human labour as well. These areas are etched into memory. Beauty, stories, big city lights, they cover what people come looking for. Size pulls crowds. So does meaning. The past is as much a part of the view as is the view itself. The two attract thousands of visitors every year, but they never lose the sense of wonder.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

In northern Arizona is a huge crack in the earth, called the Grand Canyon. Slowly formed as the Colorado River cut through rock over many ages. It is 277 miles long and at some places sinks more than a mile. The walkways here are narrow, and people walk on them, sometimes riding mules. Some opt to fly over it all in helicopters to experience this view. Its walls are wrapped in stripes of red, orange and brown, resembling the pages of a book. The majority of visitors go right onto the South Rim as a first stop. That place allows for extensive views of the deep-cutting gaps below. Each band of stone tells time without words long before humans walked here.

Statue of Liberty, New York

Standing tall and still, the Statue of Liberty rests on an island in the busy waters of New York. It was given by France over 100 years ago, and it grew as a promise. People come there now, not necessarily out of curiosity, but perhaps out of memory: steps leading up to light-filled openings above; city roofs stretching far below. Quiet rooms are located inside the building’s ground floor, containing stories behind glass cases. It never burns, but it always does. The word that is held onto with a bronze book and the links that were once chained lie apart at her feet. Decades of decades passed, ships came near her standing and not shouting.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone rests largely in Wyoming, with over half of its geysers residing there. It’s not only about steaming vents and boiling pools here, but it’s also alive with it. Old Faithful is a faithful eruption at the correct time, attracting attention to the sky. There are quiet lakes, roaring falls, deep canyons formed by time, beyond the heat. Bison wander through meadows as though in another time. Bears roam the forests, where pine trees grow thick. In areas with snow, wolves make tracks. Trails are open to the sky with people walking. At the end of the day, tents are set up along streams. Fire, ice and movement here are the loudest voices of nature. Under its earth, there is an old pulse beating, an ancient one, by itself.

Niagara Falls, New York

Thunder rolls near the border of two countries. Water is tumbling hard at Niagara, which divides into three drops between New York and Ontario. One is named American Falls, the other is Bridal Veil, both are tall on the U.S. side. The big curve is a horseshoe curve, which crashes through louder in Canada. People get on board the boats that skim the roar. Routes dug deep in the liquid curtain so that walkers can look through the foggy walls. After dark, colours blossom overhead, painting the spray when the sun dips low. All of this is going at such a quick pace that there is no stopping the rivers of time.

Walt Disney World Resort, Florida

Behind the spires of the castle, the Florida sun shines on open fields. A giant playground takes families from across the globe. Four distinct lands, four different beats: fairy tales ring out at Magic Kingdom, futures drip softly in Epcot’s domes, tales unfold in Hollywood Studios, wild echoes howl in Animal Kingdom. Slow moments gather near the costumed figures waving hello, while rides twist fast. Colour flares through sound as parades go by. People pause. Smiles stick. The clock ticks without warning. A space that is created not only for enjoyment, but also for contemplation and contemplation. Where belief returns to be light.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco

The Golden Gate Bridge is a stunning structure in San Francisco that can be seen from afar, especially from the water. Constructed in 1937, the building’s impressive reddish colour reflects light in ways that many buildings fail to. The people walk and ride bicycles on the thin cables stretched high above the strait, enticed by the open skies and distant shores. Salt air takes a toll on steel, but the bridge remains steadfast, connecting city and county, past and present, without a sound.

Las Vegas Strip, Nevada

The red lights are flashing on a road through arid terrain, attracting attention from distant eyes at Las Vegas Strip, Nevada. The long road lined with large structures is lit up all night long. People are climbing up on a slow-moving ring, and water jumps into the air from one of the grand entrances. Each step is louder and louder. The night merges into the morning, and the morning merges into the day. The night comes, the day goes, and night comes again. Some people describe it as a dream constructed brick by brick in the hot sun; others know how sound never ends, but it changes form. The tall towers line the horizon, providing sustenance, music, and games under a vast blue sky. If stories are true, not much sleep occurs here. The ground remains warm even if sidewalks are shaded. It’s a place where there’s always activity, all for the sake of choice.

Yosemite National Park, California

At Yosemite National Park, California, Valleys filled with rivers that have been dug deep over the years are surrounded by giant walls of stone. Half Dome is a sentinel with the mist of nearby falls. El Capitan attracts climbers, whether or not there are signs or invitations. Giant sequoias have stood silent for centuries under their branches. Trails lead up through meadows, which only show once the snow melts. After the spring rains, water cascades down the black rock faces in the mountain streams. Views spread out as roads meander to high country clearings. The air here is different, sharper, older, less rushed than anywhere else. Granite is reflective and keeps reflecting the sun’s rays long after the shadows fall on lower ground. The ridges along the line of the ridges preserve stories shaped by the action of ice and pressure over the ages.

Famous destinations for natural wonders can be found in the U.S. Standing on U.S. soil are some of the world’s most famous sites for viewing natural wonders.
