The 20 regions of Italy are as diverse as they are big and small, and as varied as their character and charm, from the snow-covered Alps to the sunny Mediterranean Islands. They are found in extensive mountainous, plain and coastal areas as well as old urban areas. These are not only very important geographic areas, but are also crucial for the development of Italy’s economy, tourism and culture.

Sicily

Sicily is part of Italy, a large territory, and at the same time is a self-governing island in the South of the Mediterranean Sea. It is 25,711 km², and is known for its historical sites, beautiful beaches and runs parallel to the active highest volcano in Europe: Mount Etna. It contains many ancient Greek temples, Roman ruins, Norman cathedrals and wonderful baroque towns. The time is ripe for a little of that “old-fashioned” Sicily in the form of food: not just arancini, but plenty of fish in cannoli, too. A museum island, beneath the sun, layers of history and layers of nature; a Mediterranean experience that will never be forgotten.

Piedmont

Piedmont is an area in the north-west of Italy, next to France and Switzerland. It has a surface area of approximately 25,402 square metres, and there isn’t a single region in Italy that is bigger. It’s the land of hills that extend above the splendid Alps, where internationally renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines are produced. With these tastes, food becomes something important for those who adore full-bodied tastes. Turin is the regional capital, a charming and peaceful city. A green hill in the background and the city of Como with Lake Maggiore beyond. These are the places where people are factories and where the history of their kings is. It’s an elegant place, vineyards grow side-by-side with snow-capped mountains, and sports cars streak through sleepy villages.

Sardinia

West of Italy’s mainland sits Sardinia, the Mediterranean’s second-largest island. Roughly 24,090 square kilometres in size, its coastline sparkles with clarity. Stone towers known as nuraghi rise from ancient times across the land. Culture here holds firm, distinct, rooted deep. Cliffs drop sharply along the shore, while sea tones lean toward green beneath jagged peaks. Cagliari rests at the far south, shaped long ago by Phoenicians before Roman and Spanish hands left their mark. Out here, Sardinia breathes on its own rhythm, shaped by food traditions unlike any other and lifespans that surprise most. While waves crash nearby, secrets from old times rest beneath the stone faces of cliffs, tucked into silent caves. Time hardly touches these places, leaving them whole, apart, still breathing slowly.

Lombardy

The northern area of Italy is called Lombardy, and it is the most populated region in Italy with an area of around 23,844 square kilometres. It’s a territory that’s the cradle of fashion and finance in Italy, where breathtaking lake areas like Como, Garda and Maggiore are embedded in the scenery. Borders of mountains and flat green fields extend to the bustling urban centres. Golden saffron rice dishes get their name from the regional capital, while sweet breads are made during festivals. It is the colourful centre of Italy: art and trade are thriving side by side, and history can be felt along the streets, and no doubt still hidden in the valleys.

Emilia-Romagna

Up north in central Italy sits Emilia-Romagna, stretching across nearly 22,446 square kilometres of land. Famous dishes come from here, think sharp Parmigiano Reggiano, dark balsamic vinegar, salty prosciutto di Parma. Old towns breathe deeply today: Bologna stands firm behind its age-old stone walls; Parma moves softly, graceful without trying; Ravenna glows beneath layers of ancient mosaic art. Along one edge, the Adriatic Sea curves like a whisper; on the opposite flank, mountains climb slowly until they fade into mist. This region speaks quietly, through flavours that echo long after they’re gone.

Apulia (Puglia)

Apulia is the “heel” of the Italian boot and is about 19,358 km² in size. It is well known for its beautiful Adriatic and Ionian coasts, olive trees and the unique houses of Alberobello, the trulli. It’s a good producer of olive oil and wines. Other examples of historic cities, of course, include the cities of Bari, Lecce and Matera (just across the border), where overlying layers of Greek, Roman and Norman history are found. Similar to the golden southern part, blessed with traditions and a magnificent coast.

Calabria

The region of Calabria is situated in the southern part of the Italian mainland, and it has a surface area of about 15,080 km². Here rise rugged peaks, on the shores of the two seas, the Tyrrhenian and Ionian. The chilli pods are sharp, the citrus bergamot fragrant, and the ‘Nduja sausage is spicy, and all have a deep-rooted taste in daily life. The old Greek ruins are found close to the eroded villages on the hillsides. Wild it feels, real too; where bold landforms converge with hot spices and open-hearted people.

Lazio

Lazio is situated in the centre of Italy, and contains Rome in its territory for almost 17 thousand km². They have ancient stones and ruins of the emperors’ halls, quiet alleyways laid down before the time of modern man. The landscape isn’t only for old monuments, but a territory of sparkling lakes nestled amongst green hills. The coastline bends westward towards the waves and the cliffs, where the waves move slowly, and there are no busy streets. Eating and drinking are also slower than usual, and thick spaghetti, cheese and pepper are on the menu, no frills. History does not shout; it’s in the village festivals, it’s in the family recipes that are passed down without notes. Silence is countless-folded, century after century.

Tuscany

Tuscany is a region in central Italy, covering an area of approximately 22,993 km², characterized by its hills. Centuries of artistic breath abound here, including Florence, Siena and Pisa. Slopes covered with vines offer renowned wines like Chianti and Brunello, and also golden olive oil made from local olives. Ancient stone villages cling to time-worn terrain, and quiet museum halls are full of paintings and sculptures. Beauty is nothing special; land is made without haste. A few places so solid, universal in their message of colour, flavour and sky.

Italy is a nation of diversity and a story by region; each region has its own story to tell, through its landscape, its history, its food and its culture.
