If you do not have it yet, you should be trying to get the same. The owner of an Aadhaar Card will be able to identify themselves at any place in India irrespective of the purpose. There are centres across India where you can get Aadhaar Card and enrolment is free. You can get application forms from these enrolment centres. However, if you wish to get it done through the internet then you can visit the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) website.

Process of online application

The first thing that you need to do is visit the link – https://appointments.uidai.gov.in/ – from where you will get the online application form. Then, you will need to fill up details such as name, phone number and e-mail address. You need to be careful in providing the phone number since it is the one that will be used for future purposes, especially when you have to make any changes to the personal details given online. UIDAI suggests you to be fully careful at the time of filling up the details. If you are not attentive then there could be several unwanted issues later on till the time you receive the card.

After filling up the personal details you need to select an enrolment centre and decide the date and time when you would want an appointment over there. All this can be done on the aforementioned link itself. It is obligatory that you visit the said centre so that you can get yourself registered for the card. This needs to be done irrespective of whether you have filled up the form online or not.

Important things to remember while visiting the enrolment centre

You should carry all your necessary documents such as age proof, residence proof and voter ID card when you go to the enrolment centre. This will make sure that you do not face any unnecessary delays or problems in the process of enrolment and the whole task gets done smoothly. You need to remember that when you are getting registered, you need to provide proof of your identity and address in order to substantiate your application. You can visit the UIDAI website and find out for yourself the documents that can act as identity proof. There are 18 documents that can serve the purpose.

As far as address is concerned there are 33 options that you can choose from. The officers at the said registration centre will take your photo, iris scan and fingerprints that will become part of the Aadhaar database. UIDAI includes such data because these are unique to everyone – your iris cannot be the same as anyone else’s! This unique data will help you get identified in the future. As soon as the process gets over, you will be able to cross-check all the details provided by you to ensure that they have been entered correctly. After the application and registration process gets over your Aadhaar Card will be sent to you by post. It normally takes around 2-3 months for the card to get made and sent to the beneficiary.

Nonetheless, you need to keep in mind that the Aadhaar Card is only a proof of your residence. It cannot be regarded as a proof of your citizenship and cannot act as a substitute for your voter ID card.

Read More:

Aadhaar Card – Uses, Objectives, and Benefits
Aadhar Card Program of the Government and the Supreme Court Verdict
How to Apply for Passport Online?

There are a lot of people who have Aadhaar Card these days since it is the major marker of one’s residence in India.
