Punjab Assembly Elections 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n

Punjab Assembly elections<\/a> were held today for 117 seats in a single phase. The results is due to be announced on 11 March 2017.<\/p>\n

This elections is unique for being a three-way contest between Shiromani Akali Dal<\/a> (SAD) \u2013 BJP Alliance; Indian National Congress (INC); and AAP.<\/p>\n

Major issues which will determine poll outcomes: High unemployment rate, drug abuse, rising crime, desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, water sharing dispute with Haryana<\/a>, and demonetization.<\/p>\n

SAD-BJP alliance is facing strong anti-incumbency after being in power for 10 years, while AAP has emerged as a party spoiler with no clear picture emerging on how it will perform or eat in vote share for both SAD-BJP and INC.<\/p>\n

Voter Turnout on 4 February 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is disappointing that there was an overall drop in voter turnout compared to 2012 Assembly elections. In some constituencies the electronic voting machines (EVM) were reported to malfunction. In one of the constituency, an SAD Sarpanch was reported to have fired at an INC party member.<\/p>\n

Goa Assembly Elections 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n

Goa voter turnout has been an impressive 83% plus and was conducted without any major untoward incident being reported. North Goa had a higher voter turnout with a record 84% turning up to exercise their franchise while South Goa had a 81.5%. The overall high percentage of turnout reflects high awareness of people regarding issues that concern them and the fact that the state election commission has been very active in creating awareness among people.<\/p>\n

Voting was peaceful with people turning up early to vote. Some places did report a few EVMs not functioning but mostly the election process went off without any major incident. However, one 78-year old person died while waiting to vote and voting was cancelled in one booth at Margao.<\/p>\n

In 2012 Assembly elections voter turnout was reported at 81.73%. In 2012, BJP won in alliance with MGP, however, in 2017 the party is fighting it alone.<\/p>\n

Tri-corner fight this time<\/strong><\/p>\n

With ex-Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar away from state politics, the party is facing anti-incumbency with INC likely to benefit the most. It remains to be seen how MGP and GVP eat into vote shares for the two main contending parties \u2013 BJP and INC. AAP is likely to emerge as the party spoiler and may just come out as the dark horse. Defence Minister Parrikar has hinted at going back to Goa to strengthen the party there but will await the poll outcome.<\/p>\n

Major issues in the state remain jobs, water sharing dispute with neighbouring states, state liquor policy and illegal activities involving drug and alcohol abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
