Growing up in a fairly urban environment in the ’80s and ’90s, the only times I heard the word \u201cNationalist\u201d were when my history teacher was in a particularly good mood and we were in for some lessons on the Indian struggle for independence. And the only times the word \u201cNationalist\u201d was uttered in heated conversations, was when my friends and I pretended to be Moderates and Radicals and dressed up as freedom fighters. Good old days, indeed.<\/p>\n

Being a nationalist <\/i>these days can mean a whole lot more. It could indicate your choice of meat, your political fervour, your religion and choice of God, your tendency to communicate in shuddh <\/i>Hindi, or even your decision to attempt a few twisty ‘Surya Namaskars’ in the name of Yoga!<\/p>\n

India is a land of many different languages. But some languages, some words, are more unequal than others. Like, the word ‘nationalist’.<\/p>\n

So this summer I decided to look a little closer, dig a little deeper, and discover what it is to be a nationalist<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Summers bring on their quintessential brand of insanity. When we, the nationalists<\/i>, indulge in our darkest vices \u2013 country and environment be damned.<\/p>\n
