Kids wait impatiently for summer vacations, for they don’t have to carry their heavy schoolbags (which get heavier each year) and can relish a break from the exam and test burdens. They wish to remain outside all day long, and the high temperatures don’t bother them.
Handling the kids may become a daunting task, but don’t forget that exposure to heat can lead to skin infections, mosquito bites and what not. The increase in temperatures brings along scary ailments, which must be kept at bay and just applying enough sunscreen isn’t going to prevent them. Here is a list of major diseases which strike in summers:

Heat Stroke

If you or your kids battle high temperatures for too long, it can cause heat stroke. Headaches, nausea, and dizziness being the most common symptoms. The situation gets worrisome when you feel fast heartbeat and fever. There are chances one could lose consciousness as well, which is why is necessary to have plenty of liquids throughout the day.

Food Poisoning

No doubt the street food in India is quite tempting. But, when the weather is hot and humid, it becomes an ideal environment for bacterial growth, especially causing food contamination. No matter how much you trust your street vendor and have those “Fruit chaat”, it can lead to food poisoning. It is advised that you don’t indulge in leftovers from previous days either.

Sore Eyes

Don’t be surprised your kid wakes up with a swollen eye, out of the blue! Conjunctivitis is a bacterial infection or allergy which can persist for 7 long days. If one person in the family has it, chances are others could get affected too. Make your children wash their eyes every time they return from the playground, and ensure they wash even before they go to bed. Follow the same yourself.

Dehydration

Since summers bring a lot of body sweat which we often don’t realize, it is crucial we keep up our water intake. If you are into hardcore exercising, then you need to be extra cautious about how much-bottled water you are having. 8 glasses each day, even though recommended, isn’t always enough then. It shouldn’t be considered a minor problem as it brings along a headache, nausea and even fatigue.

Water-borne diseases

Doctors always warn people to stay safe from diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera and typhoid, when summers arrive. Kids can quickly fall prey to these dangerous diseases which also last longer than the rest. Do you know that if fruits remain chopped for too long, even they can cause water-borne diseases? Avoid having outside food and you would be fine.

Infection from mosquito bites

India is still struggling to get a grip on threatening mosquito-borne diseases like malaria, dengue, chikungunya, etc. Bring in to use mosquito repellents which have at least 30% DEET and to be extra heedful, repellents containing permethrin need to be applied to clothing. Keep a regular check on your water tanks and coolers to ensure that they do not become a breeding ground for mosquitos. Make sure that the places your kids run off to are well-maintained and free of mosquitos.

Schools give summer breaks so that children and teenagers don’t have to face the harshness of hot weather. It’s your turn to ensure that these harmful ailments don’t interfere with your children’s leisure time. Only a little vigilance, and you’ll have wonderful vacations.

How to Plan Your Vacation?

Best Places to Visit in Delhi With Kids

Summers are here!
