As humans, we are always curious about what’s going on in others’ lives, what they are up to, what is the next thing happening with them and all other drama llamas. We love social media, don’t we? \ud83d\ude09 And, when people we are interested to know about are ‘google-able’, it’s whole another story. This year, the results are bizarre, to say the least. Have you seen who are the most searched personalities of 2018? And if you have, then you must be at least a lil’ surprised.<\/p>\n

For starters, Sunny Leone is not on the list (shocker). FYI, she topped the list in 2017. But, this time she’s not even in the top ten. In fact, the one who has broken the Internet most is not even your everyday celeb, or even someone who stirred a huge controversy. Nor is it some singer or a Richie rich. It is Priya Prakash, the girl whose wink perhaps has a bigger appeal than the entire Bollywood and the glamor world combined. So the world is not into sone sone patole<\/em> anymore? Are we developing new fetishes? Maybe!<\/p>\n

Every year there are some surprise elements, however, it is only this year that changed the search stats of Google wildly. 2017 was as normal as it could be with Trump, Leone, Mallya, a bunch of politicians and some controversial people making it to the list. Heck, the list is completely predictable for the US’s most searched for 2018 as well \u2013 singers like Ariana Grande, Cardi B etc. and Kardashians grabbed the tops spots. 2018 in India, however, is a completely different story. There are Sapna Chaudhary, Boney Kapoor, Anand Ahuja, and other surprises. Let’s take up the most surprising case first. The winking girl, of course.<\/p>\n


\n\"Priya<\/a><\/p>\n

Ok, Priya Prakash is not exactly (or even remotely) ultra-glamorous, but did she drive the whole Internet crazy in a time window of just 2 days. The wink, the eyebrow dance, a very youthful feminine smile and a standing confidence throughout, sure was refreshing! Agreeable to watch, nice as a time-killing water cooler chit-chat, yes. But was this really something that could storm the Internet, that too by staggering numbers?<\/p>\n

Was that the few who liked it showed it to friends, then those friends did the same with their friends and effect just kept on multiplying and we ended up with a massive Internet sensation? Since, we live in the age of FB, IG, and Whatsapp, we know anything can catch fire with social media sharing, if done the right way. So, was it this that happened or something else? We’ll never know now. Let’s add it right below the Bermuda-triangle mystery in the list of obscure things.<\/p>\n

Moving on, the other person on the list is equally, if not more, devastatingly unbelievable. Sapna Chaudhary, a native of Haryana, came a couple of years ago to Delhi to make ends meet. And, how does she do that? Well, she dances. But, after watching her Youtube videos, you’ll be surprised, to say the least. Not that she is any of an exceptional dancer, but it’s the popularity that surrounds it, leaves one scratching head.<\/p>\n

Clad in salwaar kameez (with dupatta), Sapna performs the most ordinary dance moves. You’ll have to continually shush that rising inner voice saying ‘Hey, I can do that too’. But, the reality is that you can’t. Can you really get 10-20 million views making the most elementary dance moves? A bit of praise from family and friends, yes, but that’s the end of it. You don’t become a sensation and certainly not appear in the list of most ‘googled’ personality of the year. So, you got to admire her, not scratch your head and most importantly, not judge her at all. The girl’s done hard work for each and every one of those simplistic moves. And, she also throws in occasional pelvic thrust moves and bust-shaking steps, all while being fully-attired in the traditional Indian dress. Isn’t she something! There are tents and a stage on which she mesmerises the crowd, who come in droves to see her. That, of course, is far from the glam and glitz of the duly choreographed standard Bollywood item numbers. But, then again, people love what they love. There’s no stopping of that. Head and heart don’t always go together. So, there’s that. And, did we mention she was also on Bigg Boss 11 which came late in 2017. And, tell you what, she was on the most searched celebrity in 2017 as well! She is really something. Convinced.<\/p>\n

The Husband Syndrome…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, let’s tone down the surprise factor a bit and move over to our good old Bollywood celebrities who did make it to the list. But here’s a twist, too. This year so many Bollywood ladies tied the knot. But, guess what, it’s not the blushing brides that were searched the most (with the exception of Priyanka Chopra), it’s their husbands! Nick Jonas has made it to India’s most searched celebrity this year, something he could never do even in his Jonas Brother’s day. Same happened with Anand Ahuja, the guy Sonam married. But the thing is Sonam is not even on the list! Apparently, we are more interested in the less-popular guys Tinsel Town ladies are marrying. The obsession with their husbands carries on even after the Bollywood actress dies. Despite the overwhelming media sensationalisation around Sridevi’s death, it was not she who was searched the most. It’s Boney Kapoor, her husband, about whom people were curious. Perhaps, we feel very sorry for the miserables and wanted to know how the newly widower is holding up. Is he okay? Will he be ever happy again? So so kind, our Indian audience. How nice!<\/p>\n

Who Can Resist it when Fairytales Come True?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our country also has a fixation with a girl marrying into riches. And, who has turned this brand of fairytale into reality? None other than Meghan Markle. And, she didn’t just marry any rich man. She married a prince – an obscenely rich royal who is in line for the British throne. *Let that sink in for a moment*<\/em> And, let’s be honest here, we feed on this rich marrying the poor or the ordinary stories. There’s a reason Mill and Boons make so much money with novels based on the lines of Billionaire falling for a damsel-in-distress, business tycoon marrying the waitress, and so much more. Even movies on that theme cash a lot at Box Office. We all are just romantic like that, I guess. The fever caught all around the world, too. Not just in India, Meghan is also the most searched person in the US as well this year. What wedding gown she’ll wear, what’s her height, and how was she in her drama series suits – the whole world was drawn to the not-very-popular actress going royal. All the girls wait for her metaphorical prince, but Meghan met an actual prince in the 21st century! Fictions with such a good ending hardly come true, but when they do, people go ‘Google-crazy’ about them! And, nobody can blame them.<\/p>\n

The Man We’ll Never Get over…<\/strong><\/p>\n

The other person who got most Googled this year is Salman Khan. I personally have never got his appeal. He frequently hits 100 crore clubs, alright. Both women and men love him (Why though!) and he’s on the top spot in the Forbes list of richest Indian celebrities in this year. Fixation with the rich and famous is not new, neither it is surprising! But, how a man in his 50’s with withering looks is still on the most searched celebrity list? I mean there are other people who clearly qualify as Richie Rich, are in better shape and younger, but they don’t make it. A few years back up till his late 40s, he had often been labelled as the most eligible bachelor. Talk about an aged person being a woman-magnet! But in reality, he kind of is, if we look at the most searched celebrity list again. Is this some kind of condition we’ve caught on in which we love short rich ageing guys? Human psyche, huh!<\/p>\n

2018 list is indeed eccentric. People who you will expect the least are actually the most talked about. Incredible India, they rightly say. We have explored certain people at length and now are left with extraordinary memorable Internet moments. BTW, who topped off your browser history this year?
