While the time arrives to flip the calendar over to 2019, it is also important to look back at 2018. That’s what the essence of the new year is all about, right? To look back and see- how far we’ve come, and what lies ahead. There is no growth in either stagnancy or ignorance.<\/p>\n

So, let’s turn around and give one final look to 2018. What are we taking forward from this 365 days? Well, quite a lot. Here is a quick look at some of the major highlights of 2018, ranging from the #MeToo movement, all the way to our golden success stories.<\/p>\n

#MeToo<\/h2>\n

2018 saw a second wave of the #MeToo movement emerge once again, initiated by the Bollywood actress, Tanushree Dutta. Dutta alleged that the veteran actor Nana Patekar had sexually abused her on sets ten years ago. While her account was questioned several times, the allegations acted like a spark, encouraging several others to come forward.<\/p>\n

In the days to follow, multiple women came out with their personal stories of sexual harassment at the hands of influential men in the country. Several comedians, people from the film industry, journalists etc came in public view, accused of serious harassment charges. The biggest name, perhaps, was that of former Union Minister, MJ Akbar. Accused by more than 10 women, he had to resign from his post soon after.

Progress of ISRO<\/h2>\n

On December 19, the communication satellite GSAT-7A was successfully launched into space, and with it concluded Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)’s last mission of 2018. During the year, 8 missions were undertaken by ISRO. January of this year also marked the organisation’s 100th satellite mission.<\/p>\n

With 2018 turning out well for India’s space research, enthusiastic plans have already been set for the upcoming year. These also include the launching of Chandrayaan-2, our moon-orbiting\u00a0satellite, as well as, ADITYA-L1, India’s first-ever space mission.

The sports arena<\/h2>\n

Like every other year, 2018 was a fortunate one for our sportspersons, be it any sport. In football, captain Sunil Chhetri became the world’s second-highest goalscorer, alongside Messi. Our men’s cricket team is ranked number one in tests, two in both ODI and T-20. Coming at the third position, India won 66 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2018, with 26 gold medals in its account. In Asian Games, too, the sportspersons brought laurels to the country, securing 69 medals. This was the country’s best performance in Asian Games, so far.

Politics<\/h2>\n

The political climate of India remained tense in 2018, with three key state assembly elections underway, as well as, preparations for 2019 Lok Sabha elections nearing their endgame. The year was full of highs and lows for the country. We lost many beloved names, like the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, M. Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

For the Indian National Congress, the state assembly polls came with victory in three states- Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh; loss in one – Mizoram. Another thing that gained quite a lot of attention was the “name-changing” spree of UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath. The CM renamed the city of Allahabad to Prayagraj, Mughalsarai was renamed as Deen Dayal Upadhyay after the RSS leader. Recently, while campaigning in the state of Telangana, Yogi Adityanath also proposed changing the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar, receiving ridicule from many.<\/p>\n

For the first time since the riots of 1984, a big name was convicted- Sajjan Kumar of Congress party. On the other hand, another accused, Kamal Nath was granted the post of Chief Minister in Madhya Pradesh, inviting strong criticism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
