Do you believe in ghosts? Do you think there’s an afterlife, that after we die we cross over to a different realm, yet to be understood or even identified by the physical world we live in? Well, there’s certainly more to it than meets the eyes. We’re talking about the haunted places in Mumbai<\/a>. Are you ready to go down that road?<\/p>\n

Often deserted, desolated places are associated with ghost spots. But, here are some places where ghosts wander boldly even in the most crowded chawls and broad daylight. Perhaps, it is the daring and ambitious vibe of the city or maybe it’s just the 21st century, ghosts nowadays are bold and aren’t afraid to scare you. Are YOU brave enough to meet them? If yes, then read on to plan one of the most adventurous trips of your life.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1. Sanjay Gandhi National Park<\/a><\/h2>\n

\"Sanjay<\/a><\/p>\n

Okay, this park has the real-life version of our eternal ‘Noorie’. Remember that lady always in white wandering alone in the night? Well, her more dramatic version is here. This Noorie asks for a lift from the drivers and if they don’t stop, she chases them like a mad predator. And, we don’t know what happens to those who give in to the pity of helping the poor girl alone at night and agree to give her a ride. Probably, they haven’t lived to tell the story. There are, however, still people who stay in the park in huts despite all that. They just don’t go out after the sun goes down. Probe a little and guards will tell you stories of their own encounter with the ghost lady. At night, they also move to the park’s less dense parts. Whatever that is, people in general here are more scared of meeting the female phantom than the leopard attacks.<\/p>\n

2. Tower of Silence<\/h2>\n

\"Tower<\/a><\/p>\n

The name itself has the spooky factor. This is in principle no haunted place in general. It’s just a graveyard for the Parsis. Their ritual with the dead body is to leave them open to air as they believe dead bodies pollute the earth and even fire. The corpses are left on the terrace and are open to be\u00a0eaten by any scavenger like a vulture. There’s deadly silence amidst the stink of the rotting bodies lying in a row. Just imagine walking by such a tower! The passers-by often report of some supernatural presence there. We’re not surprised, are you?<\/p>\n

3. D\u2019Souza Chawl<\/h2>\n

\"D\u2019Souza<\/a><\/p>\n

This, like other Chawls of Mumbai, used to be as ordinary and normal as it could be until an old lady dies. Locals tell tales that she fell into an unmanned village and from then on the regular normal routines have been interfered by supernatural affairs. But, that’s only at night. The spooky affairs never have happened during the day and the people living there go about their mundane activities as if nothing extramundane is there. The lady ghost is also very well-behaved. Despite her moving to the other world unwillingly, she doesn’t hold a grudge at all for those who are alive and kicking. No reports of her hurting or attacking anybody in the regions have ever surfaced. Manners maketh the man and the ladies who are a ghost. Indeed.<\/p>\n

4. Pawan Hans Quarters<\/h2>\n

\"Pawan<\/a><\/p>\n

The paranormal quotient is pretty high in these quarters. Well, that’s mainly due to the legend that is popular here. Apparently, a 20 something girl committed suicide here in 1989 by setting herself on fire. And, if the witnesses are to be believed, she replays her tragic death sequence to the locals. There are multiple common accounts where people have seen a girl on flames running and ultimately vanishing into a nearby peepal tree. Locals have built a Hanuman temple near the tree to keep the freakish events at bay. However, nobody’s been hurt in all her spooky reruns of the incident. Maybe, she just wants to give the message that it’s really a very painful way to die. Ghosts can be with good intentions, too. Maybe.<\/p>\n

5. Grand Paradi Towers<\/h2>\n

\"Grand<\/a><\/p>\n

This 3-towered residential complex was constructed to attract the posh and elite. However, the whole uptown reputation soon dwindled down after some serious speculation started doing the rounds that it is haunted. There have been about 20 suicides till date, 5 of which belong to the same family. All of the deaths were from jumping off the building and most were from the 8th floor. Some are of also of the opinion that there’s an unseen force which pulls people towards the parapet and ultimately makes them walk to their last jump. It’s highly likely we have a legit ghost living in the complex. Constructed in the ’70s, the majority of flats are still vacant. And, those who are residing organise pujas constantly, but the place is marked haunted now. And, there’s no helping that.<\/p>\n

6. St. John’s Baptist Church<\/h2>\n

\"St.<\/a><\/p>\n

Do we feel a presence around us when we are deep into prayers in this church? No, not really. The church turned to ruins a long time back in 1840. And, the place is not even haunted anymore (if locals are to be believed!). But, there’s an interesting legend that goes about it that still makes it worthy to visit today. Soon after it reduced to dilapidation the place got haunted by a ghost of a bride. And, she wasn’t of the shyest bride. People in the vicinity reported disturbances and freakish experiences. To get the place free of all the entities from the dark world, an exorcism was carried out. And, now is the interesting part. People present during the process heard wailing, screams, and even laughter. And, it all ended with a big roaring splash in the pond of the church. All the fish in it were killed due to that. Spooky, isn’t it? But, from then, no reports of any paranormal activities have been observed. She’s gone for good, we guess. But where? A new place to haunt? Probably. 7. Santa Cruz West<\/h2>\n

\"Santa<\/a><\/p>\n

Santa Cruz West is one of the most frequented localities in Mumbai but that still doesn’t discourage the creatures from the other world to torment people. Here’s another case of suicide. As far as the story goes, there was a woman on the second floor of the building who took her life after a big tiff with her husband. Soon after her departure from this world, a black dog appeared in the corridor of the floor and has been staying there since. And, that’s not the end of it. The dog occasionally howls ominously and residents believe it is only when her spirit is around. In fact, people are so scared that they don’t even say her name. All the gossip of the freakish experiences is done by referring to her as ‘second floor ki bhabhiji’! That’s definitely some bhabhiji who people will never want a home!<\/p>\n

8. Marve and Madh Island<\/a> Road<\/h2>\n

\"Marve<\/a><\/p>\n

Spooky and scenic – these are two words to describe this road which connects Marve and Madh Island. Here, we have another version of Noorie, but this one is more deadly than one we mentioned in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. That’s probably because more brutal details are involved with her murder. That’s how the ghost dynamics works, don’t they? More cruel the death, more agitated they are? Anyways, there was a bride who was killed on her wedding day and her body was dumped near the roads in the mangroves a few decades ago. And, since then, she is scaring the daylight out of people in her bridal dress. Many say that to avoid any calamity, just don’t look her in the eye. Hope, you’ll remember this handy tip if you ever go traverse those paths.<\/p>\n
