Padman, although, not made a commercial film, did have a mammoth collection at the box office. A country where sanitation poses a big problem, we needed and wanted (evident from it being a mega-hit) a film like this. And, there are more. There’s Mulk which will take you around the journey of a Muslim family in a Hindu-centric society. Or, if you wanted a film that confronts the issue of the body shaming of women, then that was addressed, too, this year in Fanney Khan. And, if you think we need another take on a student’s life after Taare Zameen Par, we have Hichki, which tells accounts of the ordeal a student goes through in his/her school life. You name it, you’ve got it. In 2018 only.

Movies That Played on Our Heart Strings

It takes a lot to stir strong feelings in us, that too in a span of a mere 110 minutes. The beautiful emotional journey taken by the protagonist is brought out beautifully on screen. It said a lot by not saying much. That was the very essence of this April 2018 release. While Hate Story 4 took eroticism upfront, Veere Di Wedding did the same but rather undercovers and in a subtle way. The latter conveyed the bold quotient through the uptown Delhi girls who don’t give a damn and live their life the way they want. It started early only in the year with Padmaavat entering the 500 crore club! It is second only to Sanju, the top on the list of highest earning films this year. The love for seeing the royalties of Ancient India is understandable. And, with Bhansali’s perfection and actors’ dedication, this period film couldn’t have been any better. Talking about Sanju, it was a powerful story based on Sanjay Dutt’s life and alighted with Ranbir’s stellar performance. We knew we had a hit in this one. Pad Man was another super-duper hit for obvious reasons. Next in line was Raazi which grabbed the box office collection with all its might. It was a spy drama, that too between an Indian and a Pakistani. The audience was, of course, curious. And lastly, Badhaai Ho was a comedy where a 25-year old son is bewildered with the pregnancy of his mother. The laughter was as much as anyone can ask for! No surprise it grossed over 220 crores!

The Colossal Shockers

While it was predictable in parts with some films’ fates, don’t take it the one which will go down without delivering the shock factor. There have been eye-widening surprises this year. The first and the foremost was Thugs of Hindostan. Forget about the profit, the film couldn’t even cover its budget cost. Something we don’t expect from Aamir’s film. And, certainly not when it is from the Yash Raj house and has heavyweights like Amitabh Bachchan. And, the latest was Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero. Made with a budget of Rs 200 crore, there have been doubts if it would even be able to cover half of its cost! This was the only major film from SRK this year and it’s rotting. Sad.

Some Pleasant Surprises

Now, looking at the brighter side, we do have some pleasant surprises as well. Some which turned out to be a blockbuster hit, like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Neither it had a big tested star-cast and a huge budget, nor some powerful out-of-the-world script. But the odds worked in its favour, and the film grossed three times of its production cost, earning Rs 150 crore on box office. Entering into 100 crore club always get one a place in the industry’s hall of fame. And, this one marched its way straight in there. The next thing which was surprising was Stree. This is not only a hit but a super hit. This is also the tenth highest grossing movie of the Bollywood for this year! Firstly, selling a horror film is difficult. Secondly, selling a horror-comedy is even more difficult, let alone the bringing around of the tricky concept it is. But, it surpassed the expectations and broke all the records for this genre. And, we are happy about getting a new theme which can work, as we know now.

For Men May Come and Men May Go, But the Show Must Go on Forever

While some left us forever with memories, like Sridevi, there have been also a few who have joined us. This year there have been many newcomers, promising ones. Starting from Sridevi’s daughter only, Janhvi Kapoor made debut this year with Dhadak and got the critics’ appraisal right from the start. And, next is Mouni Roy who is known for seductive charms, thanks to her TV series Naagin. She was cast opposite to Akshay Kumar in Gold. Quite a good start this Bengali lass had! Then came Sara Ali Khan, who has come from a rich background. She is from the Pataudi clan, being the daughter of Saif Ali Khan and the granddaughter of Sharmila Tagore. Her Kedarnath might not have created waves, but she definitely has a vibe of the next superstar. We only have to wait and see.

Which movie did you like the best in this almost gone year?
