It has its headquarters in New Delhi and is directed by the Chief of Army Staff. The President of the country is the Supreme Commander of the Indian Army. The Army has a regimental system which is divided into seven commands on the basis of geography and operations. Each command is under the control of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief with the rank of Lieutenant General. There are six operational and one training command. It was earlier situated in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, but was shifted to Shimla, Himachal Pradesh in 1993. It was later re-established on 1 May 1963 due to the Sino-Indian War which took place in 1962. Lt Gen K Bahadur Singh served as the first Army Commander of the Central Command. Prior to 1 May 1963, Lucknow was chosen as the headquarter of the Eastern Command. However, when Central Command was re-established, Lucknow was made the headquarter of Central Command instead. It was reformed as North Western Army in 1942 in order to guard the North West frontier. During that time the areas including Kohat, Baluchistan, Peshawar, Waziristan, and Rawalpindi districts were under the control of the Northern Command (which was known as the North Western Army). In 1947 the headquarter of Northern Command became the headquarters of the Pakistani Army. The Northern Command was scrapped later in 1947 upon India&#8217;s independence. But, when the Government of India decided to raise a separate command for overseeing operations in the northern borders, the command was later reformed in 1972. At that time, the headquarters for the command was established at Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir. It was reformed in 1942 as Southern Army during World War II by the British. However, the formation of the command was reverted to the original in November 1945 with the same name \u201cSouthern Command\u201d. The southern command has seen action during various important events taking place in India including the integration of various princely states in modern India, Indian annexation of Goa in 1961, and during Indo-Pakistani Wars in 1965 and 1971. It is the newest formed command in the Indian Army. Situated in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, this command has some operational units which were transferred from the western command. Following the accession of Jammu and Kashmir, the Western Command was assigned for taking the responsibility of all Indian Army Operations for seizing the area.
