When you take excess salt, there gets an excess of it in your bloodstream as well. And, kidney’s job is to keep it balanced. So, what it does is retain water in order to keep the salt’s concentration dilute in the blood. And, this puts unnecessary burden over it. For a day, it can manage for sure. For two, it can take that. But, when your regular diet is like that – having too much salt – you’re practically asking for kidney disease.

Talking about the long run, the nephrons of the kidney can get damaged, too, in the process. These are microscopic structures crucial for filtering waste. Just way too much damage.

So, let’s hit the problem upfront and see from where can you get unwarranted quantities of salt. Well, anywhere from table salt to processed foods – these contain a ton of it, by the way. Salt is the spice of life! Avoiding it WILL be difficult. So, our advice? Stick to fresh foods and keep the salt sprinkling limited, whenever possible.

6. Proteins which build out muscles’ health and are important for various growth processes. That’s great. But, not so much for kidneys. Apparently, metabolising them is one of the hardest things our kidneys do. Organ meat especially, like liver, put huge pressure on the kidneys. These kinds of meats contain loads of purine which stimulates the formation of uric acid. This acid is processed usually by kidneys only. And, if they are overwhelmed too much, you might end up with kidney stones. A diet which is rich with animal-based proteins also puts one at the risk of developing stones. That’s why it is generally advised for people with renal diseases to avoid high protein diets. And, for those who want to keep a healthy kidney for life should take these foods in a restraint manner.

7. Because, here’s a chain link going on. Sugar leads to obesity. Obesity leads to an increased risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. And, these two are major causes of kidneys diseases. Those who have bad renal health should totally do away with it. And, those who are on the other side of the fence, it’d be better if they choose to be cautious from now on.

Processed sugar has a way to sneak in our diets through breakfast cereals, desserts, condiments, and white bread. The mantra is the less the better.

Lastly, one easy-peasy shortcut to keep your kidneys healthy. Something so easy everyone can and should do. The trick is to stay hydrated. Drink 1.5 to 2 litres of water daily (barring those who have kidney issue. Those with kidney function issues should minimise their fluid intake). This will also prevent kidney stones.

Now that you know so much about foods that can be bad for your two very important organs, you might not throw the caution to the wind easily the next time!

Tips for healthy kidney:

Exercise regularly and spend a busy life.
