Our favourite alcoholic was once existing only in a book written by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay, until it was made a film in 1928. Ironically, Chattopadhyay himself wrote the novel under the influence of drink. What’s more interesting is that there are some real personal elements of him in this written account. More juice! The epic story of this never untangling love triangle between rich Dev, his childhood love Paro, and an escort Chandramukhi is consuming till the end. While you may remember only the Dilip Kumar or Shah Rukh Khan starrer version of this timeless tale, but in reality, it’s been adapted on the screen 19 times! Dev.D, hello? Ring any bells? Daas Dev (2018) is the most recent adaptation of this tragically beautiful story. How many have you seen?<\/p>\n

Latent feelings of love, Bengali families, and set in the 1900s – magical already. It’s a story of two people who accidentally got married. Yes, you read it right. There were times like that. So, did they respect the unsaid vows? They did in a way. This yet another Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay gem will take you through an altogether different ride of love, touching nonetheless. A classic love tale in its own right. No wonder they made it two times.<\/p>\n

7 Khoon Maaf – Susanna’s Seven Husbands<\/strong><\/p>\n

Love is all rainbows and sunshine. But it is also closely linked with death. And, 7 Khoon Maaf will show you exactly how. ‘Till death do us apart’ is the motto of the protagonist Susanna. But if her husband’s flaws become too much to bear for this seductive lass, she makes sure he meets death all on her own. So in her head, only death did them apart and nothing else. She’s a woman of her words and mottos, after all. In her search for true love, she moves from one husband to another leaving behind a trail of dead bodies. Hopeless romantic at day and a black widow at night – wickedly adorable.<\/p>\n

Aisha – Emma<\/strong><\/p>\n

While based on Jane Austen’s Emma, Aisha still strikes out on its own at times. Aisha\/Emma loves to play cupid, but there’s only one God of love. And, nobody can replace him. Sadly, she learns it the hard way. But, the whole journey is cute, to say the least. And, it’s the standard colourful happy-sad movie of Bollywood. So fun, yay.<\/p>\n

Haider – Hamlet<\/strong><\/p>\n

Set in the troubled waters of Kashmir, a man tries to avenge his father’s death. However, at some points, it can mess with your head, emotionally, psychologically, but there’s beauty in too. If you’ve read Shakespeare’s Hamlet, then you would appreciate the brilliance of Vishal Bhardwaj as he has set up a 17th-century story into a modern-day age masterpiece.<\/p>\n

Omkara \u2013 Othello<\/strong><\/p>\n

A crime drama which ends in tragedy. But, the central theme of it stays to be love, nonetheless. Another adaptation of Shakespeare’s book, this one is based on Othello, written centuries ago. It takes you through a heady mix of love, betrayal, jealousy, and crime. Stellar performances make it further watchable.<\/p>\n
