Obsessed with a woman who was half his age, Rajagopal kept stalking her before and after her marriage. To win the newly wed couple’s confidence, he gifted them jewellry, clothes etc. Apparently, he helped the couple set-up a shop as well. Soon after this successful propaganda, Rajagopal started terrorising them to alienate from each other. Daniel, a manager of Rajagopal from one of his branches, was given Rs 5 lakhs to kill Santhakumar. Instead, Daniel gave Santhakumar that amount and asked him to escape to Mumbai. When he refused, Jeevajothi along with her family was taken to a faraway village, while Daniel took Santhakumar away. Next day, his dead body was found in the Western Ghats of Kodaikanal. On February 6, 2015, Delhi HC reviewed the case and awarded 30-year imprisonment to the Yadav brothers without remission. At the end of 2009, Bharti Yadav tied the knot in Delhi. The wedding was attended by nearly 4,000 people including high profile politicians. But what caught the attention was the presence of her brother Vikas, escorted by two plainclothes armed men. He was out on parole for 10 hours to attend the wedding. The Nirbhaya rape case was one such awful crime which attracted condemnation from all over the world.

What Really Happened?

December 16, 2012, a horrific night that shook the entire nation. Nirbhaya (as named by media) and her male friend came out from a movie theatre and waited at Munirka, South Delhi to reach home in Dwarka. Soon after, an off-duty chartered bus halted in front of them and offered them a lift. Apart from Nirbhaya and her male friend, there were six other people on the bus, including a juvenile. After a verbal spat between the male friend and people who were already on the bus, a fight broke out and the drunk men started molesting Nirbhaya in the moving bus. When he objected, the male friend was hit with iron rods and Nirbhaya was dragged to the back of the bus, while one person kept driving the bus around in the darkness. They not only raped her but wounded her physically by inserting a rusted iron rod inside her genitalia and ripping her organs apart. After brutalizing her, the culprits threw Nirbhaya and her friend from the moving bus near Mahipalpur. The two were later taken to Safdarjung hospital in a half-dead state. As per the medical reports of Nirbhaya, her organs were severely damaged. She could hold on for 11 days and breathed her last in Singapore, where she was taken for further medical care. The male friend’s life was saved.

What’s the Status Now?

All the six accused were arrested in a few days following the CCTV footage of the bus. One of the accused, whose name is not taken in the public domain since he was a minor, was tried by the Juvenile Justice Board and sentenced to three years in a shelter home. He was released on December 20, 2015, and sent to a charity home for security purposes. The main culprit Ram Singh was arrested first but hanged himself inside his Tihar Jail cell on March 2013. However, his family claimed that he was murdered. Another accused, the brother of Ram Singh and the third accused, Mukesh Singh were given death sentences. Fourth accused Vinay Sharma, who always denied being on the bus, was anyway given the death sentence. Fifth and sixth accused Akshay Thakur and Pawan Gupta were too awarded the death sentence. However, seven years have passed, and the death penalty is yet to be executed. This case led to an amendment in the rape laws in India to make them more stringent. And led to an outcry for juveniles below 18 years accused of heinous crimes to be tried as adults.

After seven years and three months and the elasticized case, the four convicts have been hanged in the wee hours of Friday i.e. March 20, 2020 in Tihar Jail, New Delhi.

Recently a Netflix original was released on this gruesome case called “Delhi Crime”. However, the autopsy report by AIIMS revealed injury marks on her body. The wounds were not sufficient to establish the case as a murder, as autopsy indicated that the cause of the death was a drug overdose. It was informed that Pushkar was in depression and taking sedatives. On April 24, 2012, Sheena Bora, an executive working in Mumbai Metro One, went missing and was never found again. The case came into limelight in August 2015 when Mumbai Police arrested Indrani Mukerjea, Sanjeev Khanna, and Shyamvar Rai as suspects for the murder of Sheena Bora. Indrani’s husband and media tycoon Peter Mukerjea was also arrested later.

What Really Happened?

Shyamvar Rai, a driver by profession, was arrested on August 21, 2015, for a traffic offence. His interrogation by police started when he was found in possession of illegal weapons. He spilled the beans that his employer and high profile co-founder of INX Media, Indrani Mukerjea, had abducted and killed her ‘niece’ in 2012 and disposed of her body in the forest. Inquiries revealed that a matching body had been recovered a few years earlier by the local police in Pen tehsil, Raigad. The ‘niece’ turned out to be Indrani’s own daughter from the first marriage, Sheena Bora. It emerged that Indrani had been telling everyone in the intervening period that Sheena had gone abroad. Indrani and her second husband Sanjeev Khanna had carried out the chilling murder in a car driven by Rai. The murder was confirmed by the driver upon his arrest. Sanjeev Khanna also admitted to his role in the murder. However, the prime accused, Indrani Mukerjea denied the crime and claims that her daughter Sheena Bora is still alive and residing in the USA.

Why the Murder?

As per CBI, Indrani was scared that Vidhie, her daughter with ex-husband Sanjeev, would lose a considerable amount of property if Sheena got married to Rahul Mukerjea, the son of her third husband Peter Mukerjea from his previous marriage. Hence, the plan for elimination. The murder is also intertwined with some complex financial irregularities concerning the operations and sale of INX Media, with money being parked in an offshore account in Sheena Bora’s name. Reports suggest that Sheena allegedly demanded a three-bedroom flat from her mother and was also blackmailing her in the process. After her disappearance, Indrani had taken control of her accounts.

What’s the Status Now?

It’s been seven years. All the accused are behind bars. Peter Mukerjea, who had claimed shock and no knowledge of the murder initially, was also taken into custody later. But the cause of death is still unknown. Sanjay Thakur, who examined Sheena’s body, stated that since the body was burnt and half-decomposed, the cause of death is difficult to establish. So far, nearly 52 witnesses have been produced in the case and some more are scheduled in the next few days. Shyamvar Rai has turned approver in Sheena Bora murder case. Recent reports suggest that Indrani has also become an approver in the INX Media case. These diaries were found in the prayer room with tapes on them. The manner in which the bodies were found hanging in circular formation exactly matched what was written on the diaries. Another proof, which indicates towards mass suicide, is the last CCTV footage from the case, where two female members of the family, Priyanka and Neetu, are seen carrying stools and wires later used in the gruesome act.
