Born to two iconic parents, actor Rakhee and poet-lyricist Gulzar, Meghna Gulzar chose an industry which is inordinately hegemonized by men. Though over the years, from a few women filmmakers like Deepa Mehta and Aparna Sen, cinema is witnessing more sensible directors like Meghna Gulzar, Zoya Akhtar, Konkona Sen Sharma, to name a few.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, as a filmmaker, Gulzar has focused on not only films which are female-oriented but also diversified various subjects and explored ordinary human sensibilities. She started from her debut film Filhaal<\/em> w<\/span>hich was released in 2002, and it talks about surrogacy. It was way ahead of its time to Chhapaak<\/em>, <\/span>which is a need-of-the-hour subject. Though women in her films have a dominant role, the subject she chooses is beyond any categorization.<\/span><\/p>\n

On her 46th birthday, let’s look at some of her films which have given a new perspective to Indian cinema:<\/span><\/h2>\n

1. Filhaal (2002)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Starring two leading actors of that time, Tabu and Sushmita Sen, the film was not a plain sailing to push the envelope and portray a surrogate mother on screen. But Gulzar has managed to pull some great performances out and changed how female actors were looked upon.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Pooranmasi – Dus Kahaniyaan (2007)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Pooranmasi<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is one of the ten short films which was adapted from Kartar Singh Duggal’s short story. It is a tale of a mother-daughter bond and how a daughter sacrifices her life to protect her mother’s dignity. After almost seven years of hiatus, Gulzar directed this short film which was one of the ten stories by directors like Sanjay Gupta, Hansal Mehta and Apoorva Lakhia.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Talvar (2015)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Written by Vishal Bhardwaj,\u00a0<\/span>Talvar <\/span><\/em>is based on 2008 Noida Arushi and Hemraj Double Murder Case. It was a very sensitive story to tell as the case was followed by millions of people from all over the world. Not getting into the debate of how much the story was kept real and how much it is fictionalized, the case itself was so absurd that portraying it onscreen was a challenge, which Meghna Gulzar succeeds in doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Raazi (2018)<\/span><\/h2>\n

An adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s 2008 novel ‘Calling Sehmat’, <\/span>Raazi<\/em> is a spy thriller which tells the story of a Kashmiri woman who operated as an Indian spy in Pakistan. Unlike any other patriotic movie in Bollywood, Gulzar managed to keep it subtle, and keeping jingoism at bay.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Chhapaak (2020)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Bollywood movie Chhapaak starring Deepika Padukone and Vikrant Massey<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Yet to be released, Chhapaak<\/em> is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal starring Deepika Padukone. Gulzar is always known to associate herself with sensitive films, Chhapaak<\/em> is her other attempt, which will be in the theatres on 10 January 2020.<\/p>\n
