As the Indian automotive industry approaches yet another paradigm shift, all the major players in the market have started gearing up for the transcendence to sustainable mobility. However, since it will be quite a few years before electric vehicles outsell the internal-combustion kind, the latter have the urgent need for better fuel efficiency upon them.<\/p>\n

Owing to the market need, new internal combustion engines are returning some of the best figures in mileage that consumers have seen. Generally, cars in the most affordable price range are faced with the expectation of providing the best fuel-economy. It is the key parameter that most people look at, before buying a car in the five to ten lakh rupee range.<\/p>\n

Here are a few cars with the highest mileage numbers in decreasing order that one would find in the Indian market:<\/h2>\n

1. Maruti Swift DDiS<\/h3>\n

At the top of the mileage chain is Maruti’s blue-eyed boy with a 1.3 litre DDiS diesel engine that returns a fuel efficiency of 28.4 kilometres to a litre. It shares its engine with the Ciaz, but the smart hybrid system does not come as a part of its package owing to the segment and cost difference. However, the engine will no longer be a part of any car in the company’s line-up post April 2020, owing to the BSVI emission norms which will deem all higher emission-rate engines unfit for further production and sale. The current Swift diesel can be brought home for a price tag of Rs 7.03 lakh to Rs 8.89 lakh.<\/p>\n

2. Maruti Ciaz DDiS+<\/h3>\n

Sharing its FIAT-sourced engine with the Swift, is the flagship sedan of Nexa showrooms, the Ciaz diesel. However, the reason for the astounding mileage that the car returns despite being a sedan, is the smart hybrid system that it gets as a part of its powertrain. Like the Swift diesel, the clock is counting backwards for this car as well, and come April 2020, the diesel model will be discontinued due to the applicability of the BSVI emission norms.<\/p>\n

The Ciaz can be yours for a price range of Rs 9.2 lakh to Rs 11 lakh, ex-showroom. As opposed to its petrol counterpart, the Ciaz diesel comes only with a manual transmission.<\/p>\n

3. Maruti Baleno DDiS<\/h3>\n

Yet again, the 1.3 multijet from FIAT produces an unbelievable mileage of 27.4 kilometres to a litre of diesel, this time in a Nexa hatchback. The Baleno runs on the same engine as the Swift, Dzire and the Ciaz sedan, but only for as long as the engine lives to see the light of day. Come April 2020 and it goes out of commission with the entire diesel-vehicle range of Maruti Suzuki, who have chosen not to upgrade their oil-burners to BSVI. The Baleno diesel is Priced between 6.7 and 8.7 lakh for base and top variants repectively.<\/p>\n

4. Honda Jazz D-tec<\/h3>\n

Surprise, surprise, yes indeed! Just after Maruti’s unbelievably economical range comes Honda’s diesel-powered premium hatchback Jazz. With a fuel efficiency of a little more than 27 kilometres to a litre, the Jazz is driven by a 1.5 litre diesel engine which it also shares with a couple of other vehicles in the Honda line-up. However, the economy that this engine produces when in the Jazz is much above the rest Honda’s cars is because of the overall weight of the car. Priced between 8.2 and 9.4 lakhs, the Jazz is an ideal choice for anyone looking to buy a premium hatchback under the 10 lakh rupee range.<\/p>\n

5. Renault KWID<\/h3>\n

Next comes the small car brigade, led by none other than – you said it – the Renault Kwid. It is the most fuel-efficient petrol powered car in the market with a small 800 cc motor that comes paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The Kwid comes in two variants, one with the said 800 cc engine and a slightly larger 1000 cc powered one, but the former makes it to the high-mileage club and the latter doesn’t. The smaller-engine Kwid produces a nice 25 kilometres to a litre and can be had between the range of Rs 2.8 lakh and Rs 4 lakh depending on the variant of choice.<\/p>\n

6. Maruti Alto K10<\/h3>\n

Up next is yet another Maruti, but the not-so-surprising kind. The Alto K10 is only for those looking to bring home a small hatchback that’s big on mileage, but with a fairly-decent performance chart as well. With a fuel efficiency figure of 23.9 kilometres to a litre, the Alto K10 can be had with an option between a manual or an AMT transmission box. It also comes with a factory-fitted CNG option and can be yours for a price range between 3.6 lakh to 4.4 lakh rupees.<\/p>\n

7. Maruti Baleno \/ Toyota Glanza DualJet<\/h3>\n

It is practically the same car in two different avatars, and what badge it wears to your garage also depends on preference entirely. Powered by a 1.2 litre DualJet petrol engine which is mated to a five-speed manual transmission box, the Baleno\/Glanza petrol makes for a fuel efficiency of 23.8 kilometres to a litre. There are actually two variants of the same engine, and the one discussed here comes with as a mild-hybrid system, thus the impressive economy. Priced between 7.2 lakh and 7.8 lakh rupees, either variant is a good option, though our money is on the Glanza.<\/p>\n

8. Tata Tiago<\/h3>\n

The peppy hatch from Tata motors comes with all the features of a premium hatchback without its price-tag. With a fair build quality, the Tiago is driven by a 1.2 litre petrol engine that comes with the option of either a manual gearbox, or an AMT one, and surprisingly returns the same fuel efficiency figures in both. Priced between rupees 4.4 lakh and 6.15 lakh, the Tiago returns an impressive mileage of 23.84 kmpl.<\/p>\n

9. Honda Amaze D-tec<\/h3>\n

Having done more than five years in the Indian market since its launch, the Amaze has undergone one minor feature upgrade, and a full facelift, both a couple of years apart. It uses the same 1.5 litre diesel engine that powers the Jazz and the City and comes with the options of either a five-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic. Surprisingly though, its CVT produces a slightly better kmpl figure of 23.8. Priced between rupees 7 lakh and 9 lakh, the Amaze is a pretty good option for those looking to pick-up a micro-sedan under the 10 lakh budget.<\/p>\n
