{"id":334,"date":"2014-05-10T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-10T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mapsofindia.com\/on-this-day\/10-may-1857-the-first-war-of-independence-began\/"},"modified":"2014-05-10T10:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-05-10T10:00:00","slug":"10-may-1857-the-first-war-of-independence-began","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mapsofindia.com\/on-this-day\/10-may-1857-the-first-war-of-independence-began","title":{"rendered":"10 May 1857: The First War of Independence, began"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Among the many lessons the Indian mutiny conveys to the historian, none is of greater importance than the warning that it is possible to have a Revolution in which Brahmins and Sudras, Hindus and Mahomedans, could be united against us\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>~ George William Forrest, British historian, mentioned in the introduction of the State Papers soon after the end of the First War of Independence,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>What Forrest mentioned as the \u201cIndian mutiny\u201d, is considered as the First War of Indian Independence by the historians of India. Even though this term is disputed by some, all do agree that the uprising against the British administration came after a significant realisation by Indians that foreigners were not welcome in India, and should stop draining the country off its prosperity and resources.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Down the years, historians have termed this significant event by various names, including \u201cThe Sepoy Mutiny\u201d, \u201cThe Uprising of 1857\u201d, and \u201cThe 1857 Rebellions.\u201d After India gained its complete independence in 1947, it was generally agreed that this was in fact the \u201cFirst War\u201d that eventually amplified the national sentiments of the people of India, consequently causing organised Nationalist Movements across the country.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>10 May 1857, marks the date when it all began. This was the day when Indian Sepoys bombed and killed several British officers in the Meerut Cantonment. This bombing was neither an isolated event, nor a sudden occurrence. It was in fact, the result of building anger due to oppression by the tyrannical British officers. The tipping point was the use of cow and pig fat in the grease of the rifle cartridges used by the soldiers. This angered and hurt the sentiments of both the Hindu and Muslim soldiers in the army. This was also the reason why Mangal Pandey, a young sepoy of the 34<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>Native Infantry, attacked a British officer in Barrackpore at Bengal, in March the same year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Causes culminating into the First War of Independence<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>The tyranny of the British was not just towards the soldiers. They had angered and hurt every class of people in the country. The major causes included, economic exploitation by forcing imported goods and banning local stuff, destruction of traditional cultures that pushed artisans into poverty, exclusion of Indians in the higher administrative posts in the government, treatment of all Indians with racial arrogance and contempt, annexation of kingdoms as per the Doctrine of Lapse policy, and forcing people to convert to Christianity. The annexation policy, in particular, forced kings, princes and queens to fight against the British soldiers in order to retain their land.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>The Uprising<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>The First War of Independence was not a single battle, but a series of rebellions which took place in different places in North India between 1857 and late 1859. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Chief points of rebellions are as follows \u2013<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Delhi Capture:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0The soldiers from Meerut seized control of Delhi and declared Bahadur Shah Zafar as the ruler, after killing Captain Douglas, who controlled Zafar\u2019s personal guard. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Battle of Kanpur:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0Nana Sahib, adopted son of Baji Rao II, led an army and fought against General Sir Hugh Wheeler, the commanding officer, and declared himself Peshwa. This although was short lived. Nana Sahib along with supporters Tantia Tope, Azimullah Khan, and Jwala Prasad continued battling against the British commandants, until their defeat by General Campbell.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Battle of Jhansi:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmibai, along with her army of 14,000 volunteers, battled against the British army led by Sir Hugh Rose. After a two-week battle, she had to escape.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Battle at Gwalior:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0Rani Lakshmibai escaped to Gwalior and met Tantia Tope. They fought together against Sir Hugh Rose\u2019s army again in Gwalior, soon after the battle at Jhansi. In this battle, Rani Lakshmibai lost her life after courageously slaying off many British army men.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Revolt in Bihar:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0The 80 year old, Zamindar Kunwar Singh of Jagdishpur revolted against the British at the district headquarters at Arrah. He was backed by an army of soldiers. This however did not last long. He succumbed to war injuries and died at his ancestral home.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>Revolt at Lucknow:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>\u00a0After proclaiming her young son, Birjis Kadr, as the Nawab of Avadh, the Begum of Avadh Hazrat Mehal organized a revolt against the British, in Lucknow. She was helped by the zamindars, peasants, and Indian sepoys of the area. The British were forced to retreat for the time being. However, when the Begum tried capturing Rohilakhand, she was driven out.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>The Aftermath<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>It is evident that towards the end of the year 1859, the rebellions that constituted the First War of Independence were successfully crushed by the British soldiers. The British in fact made sure, that none of the prisoners spent time in jail. Many of them were hanged without trial. The British also ruthlessly shot and cut every Indian who seemed like trouble. The year after the end of the Sepoy Mutiny is remembered as the \u201cDevil\u2019s Wind\u201d, when Indians were subjected to no mercy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>In addition, the First War of Independence also brought about a major change in the British administration. All this while, it was the East India Company that ruled India. When the rebellions began, the British Parliament passed a law declaring India to be under the British Crown.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span>One of the major reasons attributed to the Indians\u2019 loss in the First War of Independence was the lack of unity. Then again, this taught the Indians important lessons with relation to their attitude towards the British. They realised that all kings, zamindars, princes, peasants and even the common village folk need to stand united, to fight the British.
