~ One of the most famous verses by Majrooh Sultanpuri.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri was the man behind over five decades of Hindi film song lyrics starting 1945 till his death on 24 May 2000. A renowned Urdu poet and songwriter, this lyricist legend from the Sultanpur village of Uttar Pradesh, gave Indian cinema words and expressions that lyricists still use and follow. He is best known for his versatility, which ranged from <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jab dil hi toot gaya\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>from <\/span><\/span><\/span>Shahjahan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>to <\/span><\/span><\/span>C A T-cat, cat mane billi\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>from <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dilli Ka Thug,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>to <\/span><\/span><\/span>Aaj main uupar aasmaan neeche\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>from <\/span><\/span><\/span>Khamoshi<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>, and many more. Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s lifetime of work has left us with a treasure chest of some of the best songs ever written in Indian films. In addition, his first love, <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayari<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>ghazals<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> also garnered much praise from ardent listeners and fans.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Born in an orthodox Muslim family on 1\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>October 1919, Majrooh Sultanpuri earlier (actual) name was Asrar Ul Hassan Khan. His father, a police constable under the British regime was ironically against giving his children an English education. Asrar, therefore, studied in a madarsa and later went to the Takmeel-ut-Tib College of Unani in Lucknow, to become a <\/span><\/span><\/span>hakim<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>, as per his father\u2019s wishes. Medical career was, although, not his career choice. Even though his father disliked his love for <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayari<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Asrar after becoming a hakim spent more time in writing poetry and attending <\/span><\/span><\/span>mushairas,<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> than treating patients. He changed his name to \u2018Majrooh\u2019, which means \u2018wounded\u2019 and suffixed it with the place he was from, to perhaps establish his future as a <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayar<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Journey from Mushairas to Movies<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s movie career was more of a financial decision than a dream. His passion lied in writing Urdu <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayari<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>ghazals,<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> and performing in <\/span><\/span><\/span>mushairas<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>. He was considered as one of the best <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayars<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> in and around Sultanpur. His mentor, Jigar Moradabadi, an eminent <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayar<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> in his own right, took his <\/span><\/span><\/span>shagird<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em> (pupil)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to various places around India for <\/span><\/span><\/span>mushaira<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> performances. In one such <\/span><\/span><\/span>mushaira<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> in Bombay (now Mumbai), A R Kardar happened to listen to Majrooh\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span>shayari<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Impressed by his impeccable diction and tune, Kardar approached Majrooh to write songs for his upcoming movie. Majrooh Sultanpuri did not think highly of films, and therefore he rejected the offer then and there. Kardar then asked Jigar Moradabadi to help him get across to Majrooh. Moradabadi managed to convince Majrooh to take up the film offer, saying that it pays better and will ensure better financial condition for his family. Majrooh agreed and after writing a sample for music composer Naushad, he was signed for A R Kardar\u2019s next production. Thus, began the Hindi film industry\u2019s tryst with Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s verses.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His contribution to Indian Cinema<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s career in films was nothing less than a kick start! His first set of songs in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Shahjahan\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>was a huge hit. Soon he became a well known face in the industry. Despite his communist political ideologies that got him into trouble with the government and he was sent to jail, his popularity did not diminish at all. His lyrics of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Andaz\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1949), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Aarzoo\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1950), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Baaz <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>(<\/span><\/span>1953), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mr. & Mrs. 55\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1955), <\/span><\/span><\/span>CID\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1956), and many more, in the first decade, created a buzz among the public. His songs were enjoyed by people of all age groups and class. His entire repertoire consisted of over 300 films, with blockbusters musical hits like, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1958), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sujata\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1959), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dosti\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1964), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mamta\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1966), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Teesri Manzil\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1966), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Baharon Ke Sapne\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1967), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Caravan\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1971), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pakeezah\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1971), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Yaadon Ki Baraat\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1973), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Anamika\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1973), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Abhimaan\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1973), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Anari\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1977), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kaalia\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1981), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1988), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Love\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1991), and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1992). The song <\/span><\/span><\/span>Chahunga main tujhe saanjh savere\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>for <\/span><\/span><\/span>Dosti,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>won him the first and only Filmfare Award.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri had the opportunity to work with a number of musicians including Naushad, S D Burman, R D Burman, Roshan, Madan Mohan, Ravi, O P Nayyar, and later Laxmikant Pyarelal and A R Rahman. The decades of 1950s and 1960s was ruled by the \u201cformidable quartet\u201d of lyricists \u2013 Shakeel Badayuni, Shailendra, Sahir Ludhiyanvi, and Majrooh Sultanpuri himself. They made the time the golden era of Hindi film music adorning each song with a rich dose of beautifully sweet Urdu words. Majrooh is cherished for introducing Urdu words like sanam, nasha, dilruba, dilbar<\/em>, and the most prominent today, mohabbat<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Versatility is considered as the main reason for Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s illustriousness. He could dole out any kind of song, from folk and ghazals, to comedic and romantic renditions, easily. He was therefore, comfortable with both Naushad\u2019s classical tunes to R D Burman\u2019s rock and roll style of music. His colleagues and contemporaries remember him as being \u201cyoung at heart.\u201d This may have been the reason that Majrooh Sultanpuri\u2019s lyrics in the 20th\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>century, are still regarded as true to its age and still rich in their expressions. Majrooh was comfortable writing <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ai Kaash Ke Hum\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>for <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>, and even <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jaanam Samjha Karo\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>for the movie of the same name. His later works include <\/span><\/span><\/span>Andaaz Apna Apna\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1994), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Akele Hum Akele Tum\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1995), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Guddu\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(1995), and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pukaar\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>(2000), all celebrated for their music.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 for his contribution to Hindi cinema. He is in fact, the first and only lyricist to have been recognised with the highest honour. Apart from this, the poet in Majrooh never left him and his anthology named <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ghazal\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/em>won an award from the Maharashtra State Urdu Academy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His Death<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Majrooh Sultanpuri for long had suffered from lung disease. A severe pneumonia attack was the reason for his demise. He was 80 years of age, when he expired.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
