Jhumpa won the Pulitzer Prize in the year 2000\u00a0for Debut Fiction for her book <em><i>Interpreter of Maladies<\/i><\/em>, the first Asian to do so.<\/p>\n<p>An Indian American author of Bengali origin, she did her Bachelors in English literature from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Barnard-College\"><u>Barnard College<\/u><\/a><u>\u00a0in 1989<\/u>, following it up with an M.A. in English, an M.A. in Creative Writing, an M.A. in Comparative Literature from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Boston-University\"><u>Boston University<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in the 1990&#8217;s\u00a0and finally a Ph.D. in Renaissance Studies. She was at Provincetown\u2019s Fine Arts Work Center during 1997-1998 on a fellowship. She tied the nuptial knot with Alberto Vourvoulias-Bush, a journalist in 2001, and now\u00a0lives<strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>with her husband and their two children.<strong><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/strong>Lahiri joined the Princeton University faculty on July 1, 2015 as a professor of creative writing in the Lewis Center for the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Jhumpa has also taught creative writing at Boston University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Her debut book, <em><i>Interpreter of Maladies<\/i><\/em>\u00a0investigates issues concerning the lives of Indians or Indian immigrants. She has bagged several awards. In 1993, she received the TransAtlantic Award from the Henfield Foundation, the O. Henry Award for short story <em><i>Interpreter of Maladies<\/i><\/em>\u00a0in 1999, the PEN\/Hemingway Award (Best Fiction Debut of the Year) for <em><i>Interpreter of Maladies<\/i><\/em>\u00a0in 2000, The New Yorker\u2019s Best Debut of the Year for \u201cInterpreter of Maladies\u201d and the M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award from the James Beard Foundation in 2000, besides the coveted Pulitzer prize. <em><i>Interpreter of Maladies<\/i><\/em>\u00a0has since been translated into 29 languages and been a bestseller in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2000, her story <em><i>The Third and Final Continent<\/i><\/em>\u00a0published in a summer 1999 fiction issue of The New Yorker was one of the three stories that fetched the magazine a National Magazine Award for Fiction. Her second book <em><i>The Namesake<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was published in 2003. In 2006, a film, <em><i>The Namesake<\/i><\/em>\u00a0was released based on the novel by the same name, starring Kal Penn.<\/p>\n<p>Lahiri&#8217;s second collection of short stories, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unaccustomed_Earth\"><u>Unaccustomed Earth<\/u><\/a>, was released on April 1, 2008 which bagged \u00a0the rare distinction of debuting at number 1 on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list\"><u>The New York Times<\/u><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Times_Best_Seller_list\"><u>\u00a0best seller list<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and also received the 2008 Frank O\u2019Connor International Short Story Award (the world\u2019s largest prize for a short story collection) and was a finalist for the Story Prize.<\/p>\n<p>She contributed the essay on Rhode Island in the 2008 book\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780061470912\"><u>State by State: A Panoramic Portrait of America<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Her novel\u00a0<em><i>The Lowland<\/i><\/em>\u00a0(2013)\u00a0was nominated as a finalist for both the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Booker-Prize\"><u>Man Booker Prize<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/National-Book-Award\"><u>National Book<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/National-Book-Award\"><u>Award<\/u><\/a><u>\u00a0<\/u>and earned Lahiri the 2015 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature.<\/p>\n<p>Lahiri was accorded a 2014 National Humanities Medal by U.S. President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Barack-Obama\"><u>Barack Obama<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Her nonfiction also includes\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780525432753\"><u>The Clothing of Books<\/u><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0which was originally published in Italy as\u00a0Il vestito dei libri.
