Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon, born on August 28, 1928, was a physicist and a policy maker from India. He played a vital role in the development of science and technology in India. He is well-known for nurturing the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, which was founded by his mentor Homi J. Bhabha in 1945.<\/p>\n

His experiments included cosmic rays, through which he explored the properties of fundamental particles. He was also involved in setting up experiments of balloon flight, and also experiments with cosmic ray neutrinos in the mines at Kolar Gold Fields.<\/p>\n
He worked as the President of the Indian Statistical Institute and as a Vikram Sarabhai Fellow of the Indian Space Research Organisation. Apart from this, he worked for other organisations as well, including President of the National Academy of Sciences, India, Chairman Board of Governors in Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay; Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai; and Chairman Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad.<\/p>\n
In 1970, he was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society. The asteroid ‘7564 Gokumenon’ was named after him in 2008.<\/p>\n
Mambillikalathil Govind Kumar Menon did his education from Jaswant College, Jodhpur, and the Royal Institute of Science, Bombay. He then moved to the University of Bristol to pursue his Ph.D in elementary particle physics. He completed his Ph.D under the guidance of Nobel Laureate Cecil F. Powell.<\/p>\n
