Where is Madhya Pradesh?

Madhya Pradesh is a Central Province in India. Uttar Pradesh surrounds it to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the southeast. It also shares borders with Maharashtra to the south, Gujarat to the southwest, and Rajasthan to the northwest. The formation of Madhya Pradesh as a state took place on November 1, 1956.

What is the Geography of Madhya Pradesh?

Madhya Pradesh spreads across a total area of 308,252 sq. km (119,017 sq. mi). It ranks 2nd in terms of total area amongst the states and union territories in India. Its population recorded 72,626,809 (as per the 2011 census). The population density of the state was 240/sq. km (610/sq. mi) (as per the 2011 census). Madhya Pradesh is in the 5th rank in terms of population in the country.

It is home to many species of mammals, including tiger, leopard, sambar, chital, barking deer, swamp deer, and many more. Various kinds of birds are also spotted in Madhya Pradesh, such as- Indian Pitta, Indian Roller, Golden Oriole, and Peafowls.

The state tree of Madhya Pradesh is “India Banyan”, while Sacred Tree is the state’s flower. Besides this, the state has declared Barasingha as the official state animal, and Indian paradise flycatcher has been accepted as the state bird of Madhya Pradesh.

The state has a subtropical climate. Like other parts of the country, it also has three seasons- – Summer Monsoon and Winter.

The summer temperature of Madhya Pradesh remains in the range of 30°C (86°F) to 42°C (107°F). The eastern parts of the state remain hotter than the western regions. The average winter temperature in the state remains between 9°C (48°F) to 17°C (63°F).

Madhya Pradesh receives an average annual rainfall of around 1200 mm. January and May are the coldest and hottest months, respectively, in the state.

The economy of Madhya Pradesh mainly depends on fuel, minerals, agriculture, and biodiversity.

The state has the highest stone, diamond, and copper reserves in India. It is also a diamond-producing state in the country. Madhya Pradesh produced 38,437 carats diamond in 2018-19.

It is famous for several industries, such as- auto and auto components, textiles, cement, agro-based industries, forest-based industries, pharmaceuticals, tourism, mineral-based industries, and manufacturing.

The state has been progressing well in cotton and silk production. Madhya Pradesh exported cotton yarn of US$ 224.72 million in 2019-20. However, merchandise exports from the state touched US$ 4.02 billion in 2019-20 (until December 2019).

It is also famous for its power generation. As of March 2020, it had a total installed power generation capacity of 24,821.05 MW, which was distributed as- 7,187.62 MW under state utilities, 6,868.38 MW under central utilities, and 10,765.05 MW under private sector.

Agriculture plays a major role in Madhya Pradesh’s economy. The state produces several crops like soybean, wheat, gram, linseed, green pea, garlic, linseed, mustard, sunflower, and pulses.

The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of Madhya Pradesh was Rs 8.26 trillion (US$ 118.18 billion) for 2019-20.
