Formed by the river Varahi, Kunchikal Falls is the highest waterfall in India.

Located near the Shimoga district of Karnataka, it falls through a height of 455 metres on rocky boulders – carving a very beautiful sight. On a global scale, the waterfall is 116th highest waterfall in the world. To generate electricity, a hydroelectric plant and Mani dam have been built. The speed greatly reduces after the water goes into the dam’s reservoir. The beholding feature of the waterfall is that it cascades down in levels with a backdrop of spellbinding greenery.

However, with the construction of the dam, public visits have been restricted. A gate pass is required to see the waterfalls. It is issued at around 15 km away from the spot at Hosangadi village.

The best time to go there is from the months of July to September, that is, during the rainy season. During this period, the current and flow are high.
