Brief View of the Largest International Airport in India
The largest airports are often not the busiest ones (busiest airports are those which handle the most passengers). However, the largest ones have long-term growth options – more land is available for increasing runway length, increasing air freight storage, and expanding/adding terminals.
The largest International Airport in India is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, which spans 5,495 acres. Opened on March 23, 2008, this is the primary commercial airport of the city. In 2019, it recorded the passenger traffic of 2,09,07,570 passenger traffic, which makes it the sixth-busiest airport of the country by overall passenger traffic.
The airport also serves as a hub for TruJet, Quikjet Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, SpiceJet, Blue Dart Aviation, and Air India Regional. It has two runways, a cargo terminal, and a passenger terminal. Additionally, there are also two MRO facilities, a fuel farm, and aviation training facilities.
There are also plans to make the airport entirely run on a solar power plant. The 5 MW plant was commissioned in 2016 by GHIAL (GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.). The cost is around ₹30 crores; the construction of the plant will complete next year.
The airport has one passenger terminal, covering 105,300 square meters and has a capacity for 12 million passengers in a year. Its eastern side handles domestic flights while the western side is for international operations. There are a total of 96 check-in desks, 46 immigration counters, and 19 kiosks for check-in.
The airport has two runways: Runway 09R/27L (4,260 × 60 meters) and Runway 09L/27R (3,707 × 45 meters). Runway 09R/27L is the primary runway and is big enough to receive the world’s largest passenger aircraft, Airbus A380. It is also ILS (Instrument Landing System) equipped.
Runway 09L/27R is shorter in length and is mainly used when the airport traffic rises or when the primary runway is under maintenance. To the north of them, there are MRO aprons, passenger terminal and the cargo.
The second-largest international airport in India is Indira Gandhi International Airport, spanning 5,220 acres. It is also the busiest airport in the country. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, covering 4,800 acres, is the third-largest one.
