Nearly 7,500 km long Indian coastline makes the country one of the largest peninsulas in the world. There are nine coastal Indian states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and West Bengal which are home to all the 12 major ports of India.

The state of Tamil Nadu, with 3 major ports stands on the top in the list of states with the maximum number of major ports in India. The three major ports in this state are- Ennore Port, Tuticorin Port, and Chennai Port.

Major ports in Tamil Nadu

1. Ennore Port (now called Kamarajar Port Limited)

Ennore Port, now formally renamed as Kamarajar Port Limited, is the first major port in India which has been corporatized and registered as a company. The port has the capacity of 20 berths to handle a variety of bulk, liquid, automobile and container cargo. It is an artificial port which is 24-hours operational irrespective of the weather conditions and a large backup land having an eco-friendly environment, advanced navigational facilities, well-organised logistics systems, and transport terminal.

2. Tuticorin Port

Tuticorin Port, located in Tamil Nadu, is an artificial deep-sea harbour and counted among the 12 major ports of India. It is the second largest port in the state of Tamil Nadu and one of the largest container terminal in India after Chennai Port. The artificial port of Tuticorin is functional in all types of weather conditions and receives a large volume of international traffic. The Tuticorin Port is the best for maritime trade and pearl fishery done on the Bay of Bengal. The port city is also called the Pearl City and is one of the delightful sea gateways of India from Tamil Nadu.

3. Chennai Port

Chennai Port is one of the oldest and the second largest port in the country. This port, situated on the Coromandel Coast of India, manages a variety of cargo containers, automobiles, coal, fertilizers, and petroleum products. The Chennai Port terminals have access to lighthouses, intra-port connectivity, pipelines, and railway terminus.
