Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and is located in the foothills of the Himalayas. The name Itanagar literally means "Fort of Bricks" and was named after the Ita Fort, which was built here as early as the 14th or 15th century. Under the administration of the Papum Pare district, the city is home to many historical forts, dating back to the 15th century, Buddhist temples and churches. Itanagar and its adjoining areas are populated by the Nyishi tribe. |
