Ladakh, literally meaning "Land of High Passes" is located in Jammu and Kashmir and cradled between the Kunlun Mountain Range in the north and the main great Himalayas to the South. The area is populated by people of Indo-Aryan and Tibetan descent and is one of the most sparsely populated regions in Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh today borders Tibet to the East, Lahaul and Spiti to the south and Kashmir, Jammu and Baltiyul regions to the west and the Trans-Kunlun territory of Xinjang to the far north.
