What does GPS stand for, and what is it primarily used for?
GPS stands for Global Positioning System, a satellite-based navigation system that helps determine the precise location of a person, vehicle, or device on Earth. It works through a network of satellites that continuously transmit signals to GPS receivers. By processing signals from multiple satellites, a GPS receiver can calculate its position, including latitude, longitude, and altitude, along with accurate time information. GPS is widely used for navigation, mapping, route planning, vehicle tracking, aviation, shipping, surveying, and emergency services. Smartphones also use GPS to provide location-based services such as directions, ride-hailing, weather information, and finding nearby places. Although GPS was originally developed by the United States, similar satellite navigation systems are now operated by other countries and regions, including India's NavIC system.
