16 Dead Due to Landslide in J&K, More Rains Expected

March 31, 2015 11:30 IST – As per media reports, about 16 people have already died in Budgam district due to the mudslide in Jammu and Kashmir. The heavy rains over the weekend have caused floods in the region which resulted in the landslide. According to media reports, eight dead bodies have been recovered from a house which collapsed in the landslide. Although the rains have subsided at the moment, but the meteorological department predicts heavy rains in coming days. Reportedly, eight teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have reached Kashmir to evacuate the stranded people.


Heavy Downpour Lashes Most Parts of Kashmir Valley, Government Declares Alert

March 30, 2015 10:55 IST – The incessant rains across the most parts of the Kashmir Valley resulted in River Jhelum crossing the danger level in Srinagar and Sangam area of South Kashmir. The government issued an alert on Monday asking people to move to higher reaches to avoid low-lying areas that are flooded. Besides, an avalanche warning was also issued for next 24 hours in avalanche-prone areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Although the weather has improved a lot post mid-night, a few spells of minor rainfall is predicted during the day.

Both India and Pakistan suffered from the floods

Both India and Pakistan have suffered from the floods which has hit both the nations. River Jhelum surged by the heavy rainfall flows to the Indus river basin in Pakistan. As per media reports, 264 people have died in Pakistan while 200 lost their lives in India. According to media reports 1,30,000 people have been rescued so far in India. Rescue operations are still underway to save the people who are still stranded in J&K. A study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has warned that India will be hit by such massive floods in future as well.

J&K floods: Over 1,10,000 rescued so far, many still awaiting help

According to the authorities, more than 1,10,000 people have been rescued so far from the massive floods which have hit J&K. But, many people are still awaiting help and required assistance. According to media reports, a fresh landslide occurred in Ramban district. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that bottles of 2 lakh litres of drinking water were supplied to the people who were affected due to the floods. As per media reports all the educational institutions except those which are serving as relief camps will be open from 12 September. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has announced free ration to the people for next six months.

J&K floods: Nearly 1,00,000 rescued so far

Nearly 1,00,000 people have been rescued so far in the tireless rescue operations by the NDRF and the armed forces. As per media reports, about 5,00,000 people are still stranded in J&K. The flood water receded in some areas and the rescue teams were able to evacuate more people and provide supplies to the needy. According to media reports, all the employees and officers of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) have decided to offer their one day salary to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to be contributed for the help to the flood affected people. The Indian Air Force today scaled back their rescue operations after the angry residents pelted stones at them and their choppers. The angry people are accusing the government for lack of assistance at the time of crisis.

J&K floods: Help pours in from all quarters

The rescue and relief operations for J&K floods have been speeded up. Help and assistance has been pouring in from all quarters. The Indian Navy has sent its Commandos to reach out the people who are still marooned in their houses in Srinagar. As per media reports, the Army has provided 9 satellite phones to the administration of the state and has shifted the BSNL mobile network from Kargil to Badami Bagh so that communication could be established with the cantonment. The Delhi Division of the Northern Railways has made special arrangements so that people could be taken to safer areas. According to media reports, about 400-500 students from NIT Srinagar were rescued and will be flown to Delhi today. It is also reported that the Golden Temple in Amritsar will be providing food to the people in the flood affected areas and the IAF will also fly special aircraft to provide special food packets.

J&K still battling for lives

In recent developments to save and rescue the stranded people in Jammu and Kashmir, the Army has deployed about 329 columns of its personnel-244 in Srinagar and 85 in Jammu. As per media reports, the water level receded a little which helped the rescue operators to save 29,000 more people. The army cantonments are also worst hit due to the hit in the water, electricity and other supplies. According to reports, many government employees are struck in a hotel in Srinagar and about 98 students are trapped and seeking for help near the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar. It is reported that the DGCA has asked the airlines to cut the prices of air tickets from Srinagar-Delhi and Leh-Delhi so as to help people reach safer places. The situation in J&K does not seem to be controlled soon as the weathermen have forecasted more rains in the coming days which could affect the rescue operations.

J&K floods: 4 lakh still stranded

The multi-agency rescue teams improved their pace of rescue operations as the rain eased a little in J&K yesterday. The rescue teams had airdropped about 563 tonnes of relief material so far. As per media reports, 47,000 people have been evacuated so far and about 4 lakh are still stranded in the state. It is also reported that in some areas of South Kashmir such as Kakpura, Pulwama, Sangam, Lathipora and Awantiputa no rescue operation has been launched yet. J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the government will reach each and every person and will rescue and rehabilitate them. Army Chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag is likely to visit J&K today to review the rescue operations.

J&K still seeking help

Floods in Jammu and Kashmir are not an uncommon phenomenon, but this time the devastation has resulted in a major destruction in the state. As per media reports, the NDRF team has rescued 10,470 people so far but there are many more people who are still stranded and are looking for a help. The state governments are also extending help to help and save the people. According to reports, Odisha government’s Chief Minister’s Relief Fund has announced an assistance of Rs. 5 crore for J&K. Expertise, logistics and financial aid of Rs. 10 crore is being offered by the Uttarakhand government. It is also reported that the private chopper firms and the state-run Pawan Hans Helicopters are mutually making relief and rescue efforts in flood-driven J&K.

Death toll touches 200 in J&K floods

As Jammu and Kashmir continues to battle with the floods, the death toll is reported to have touched 200. The Army and the NDRF teams are still trying to evacuate maximum people who are stranded in the state. As per media reports, the flood water has entered the areas such as Shaheed Gunj, Qamarwari, Kaksarai and Zainakadal. In Jawahar Nagar and Rajbhag area, the water level is noted between 10-15 feet. As all the communication networks have been shut down, Home Secretary Anil Goswami has sent 15 high-frequency wireless sets to Srinagar so that the Central government can get connected to J&K’s civic administration. According to media reports, a bunch of NGO’s and organisations have initiated a website to help out the flood victims. They are seeking help from the people of India through social media to contribute the necessities which could be made available to the flood victims.

J&K floods: More than 175 dead

Jammu and Kashmir continues to battle with the worst floods due to the incessant rains. As per media reports, nearly 175 people have died so far and thousands have been stranded throughout the state including Srinagar. Massive rescue operations by the army and the NDRF are underway to help, save and evacuate thousands of people who are stranded in the floods. Telecom and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the condition in the state is critical as most communication channels including BSNL have been shut down. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has told the media that the government is increasing the manpower for the rescue operations and is trying to extend its assistance. According to media reports, about 25 boats were launched in floods in Srinagar and more than 5,000 people have been rescued so far.

Worst floods in 60 years in J&K; Thousands marooned

As a result of the massive devastation in Jammu and Kashmir due to the floods, thousands of people have been stranded in Srinagar. As per media reports, more than 150 people have already died in J&K. In Srinagar, people are longing for their rescue and are waiting on the terraces and rooftops of their homes. The water level of the Jhelum River is reported to be rising at a constant level and the people are looking for a shelter and trying to escape the rising water level. As per media reports, some areas such as Anantnag, Pulwama and Shopian have completely lost contact with the bridges and roads. In many areas, the phone and electricity lines are down which is causing more troubles in the region.

Flood situation in Kashmir worsened

As the flood situation in Kashmir worsened on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Srinagar to review the relief and rescue operations in the state. More areas have been inundated and vital roads submerged, with the death toll reaching 116 in the beleaguered state.

The armed forces have pressed 103 columns into service and launched helicopter-based mission to rescue the people stranded in the flood affected areas, but bad weather has hampered their efforts, compelling them to use boats. But recently a boat carrying 11 army personnel capsized at Kakapora in Pulwama district of south Kashmir.

In fact, South Kashmir districts are the worst affected by the unprecedented floods. Over 30 percent of the area of Srinagar is inundated with areas like Badamibagh, Sonawar, Rajbagh, Kursu, Natipora, Nowgam and old Barzulla getting submerged due to the breach in the embankments of river Jhelum at many places. 390 villages have been submerged while 1225 are partially affected by torrential rains in the Valley.

In Jammu, more than 1000 villages have been affected by the flood waters. Rajouri and Poonch districts are the worst affected as around several bridges and roads besides power installations have been damaged.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has thanked the Centre for extending all-round help and approval of Rs 1000 crore SDRF funds to evacuate the trapped people to safer locations in boats and vehicles.
Jammu and Kashmir Floods: Death Toll Rises to 120

The death toll due to incessant downpour for the last five days in flood-affected areas of Jammu and Kashmir has risen to 120. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will today undertake an aerial survey of the affected area. While 14 bodies have been recovered, many are still feared trapped. Security forces and the state police have so far rescued more than 2,000 marooned people in Jammu, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Ramban, Samba, Doda and Kishtwar districts. The Met office, however, said the “worst is over”. According to reports, 14 people died on Friday in a landslide in Thanamandi area of Rajouri district. The weather office forecast more rainfalls across the state today, but added that the weather condition will improve from Sunday.

Incessant rains over the past few days have created havoc in most parts of Jammu & Kashmir. On Thursday, a flood alert was sounded in the state after River Jhelum was reported to cross the danger mark after heavy rains. As per media reports, about 23 villages are inundated by floods in Anantnag and Kulgan districts of Kashmir. It is also reported that about 65 have died and more than 250 has been submerged due to the devastation. Srinagar is inaccessible through neighbouring places such as Jammu, Poonch and Ladakh.Chenab,Ujh and Jhelum, all these rivers are reported to be flowing above the danger level. Only Tawi River is marginally below the danger level. Rescue operations are going on but choppers could not be used due to bad weather conditions.
