Nine Killed as Mumbai-Dehradun Express Catches Fire

At least nine lives have been lost in an accident today in which the Mumbai-Dehradun Express caught fire. The incident happened near the Dahanu town in the Thane district, Maharashtra, when three coaches of the train caught fire and soon turned into a furnace, killing one woman and four men, among others.

According to authorities, “The fire was noticed on the speeding train by a level-crossing gateman who alerted the guard. The guard informed the driver and the train was stopped. The gateman did a commendable job and averted a major disaster.” The fire reportedly broke out around 2:50 a.m. in the S3 coach, spreading to the adjacent two.

As of latest reports, the identification of the bodies is in progress. The damaged coaches were removed and the train continued on its way to Dehradun. The fire was extinguished at the Gholwad station, 145 km north of Mumbai.

A probe has been ordered to determine the cause of the fire. At the same time, nion Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has announced a compensation of Rs. five lakh each for the deceased, and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.
