Violence in Mathura: At least 24 people killed, 320 arrested

At least 24 people, including two policemen (an SP and an SHO), were killed in Thursday’s violence in Mathura. A violent clash erupted between police and members of a sect in Jawahar Bagh area leading to this tragedy.  According to reports, about 3,000 people had illegally set up camp on a 260-acre government land for last two years. Tension continues to prevail in the area as police seized a large cache of munition from the site. They have arrested 320 people so far. While the Centre sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the incident, the UP CM Akhilesh Yadav has ordered a probe into the violence.
