Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and Minister of Steel (May 2019 – Present): Dharmendra Pradhan

Date of Birth: Pradhan was born on June 26, 1969.

Place of Birth: He was born at Talcher in Odisha.

Parents: His mother is Basanta Manjari Pradhan and his father is Debendra Pradhan. Debendra Pradhan has served as the Minister of State for Surface Transport when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister (PM) of India.

Spouse: He is married to Mridula Pradhan and they have 2 children.

Political Party: He is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the All India General Secretary of the party as well. He has been in this post from 2010. In 2011, the party assigned him additional responsibilities to take care of the work being done by the party in Jharkhand. He is a member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) as well. He became a member of the same in 1983 and is now said to be a close aide of Amit Shah too.

Education: Pradhan is an alumnus of the Utkal University.

Career: Coming from a family with strong political roots, he learnt the ropes very early. From 2000 to 2004, he was a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Pallalhara constituency. He has handled BJP work in Karnataka from 2011 to 2013.

From 2010 till now, he has been one of the leaders in charge of handling the election work done by BJP in Bihar. He has also led Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). He was the National President of the same from 2004 to 2006. He is also in charge of BJP’s party units in Jharkhand and Uttarakhand. Additionally, he was the National Secretary of BJP from 2007 to 2010. He has also been taking care of the BJP’s party unit in Bihar from 2013 onwards. His past credentials include being President of the Talcher College Students’ Union in 1985. In 1995, he was the National Secretary of ABVP.

Political Milestones: From 2004 to 2009, Pradhan was a Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from the Deogarh constituency.

From April 3, 2012 to April 2, 2018 he was the Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar. From April 3, 2018 onward, he has been the Rajya Sabha MP from MP (Madhya Pradesh). From September 3, 2017 to May 30, 2019 he served as the Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. On May 30, 2019 he became the latest Union Minister of Steel, in addition to the duties of the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas that he has been handling since May 26, 2014.
