Delhi Police Inks MoU With Truecaller To Fight Cybercrime

On March 14th, Delhi Police inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with caller identity verification application Truecaller to boost its battle against online fraud and other deception-related crimes. Due to this agreement, all authorized contact numbers provided by the Delhi Police will be marked with a specific green label and blue mark on the Truecaller platform, allowing all Truecaller users to identify Delhi Police personnel.

Sanjay Singh, special commissioner, licensing and legal division, media cell, Delhi Police, told ANI, “Our caller IDs will have a green badge, blue tick & a govt badge so whosoever calls & receives calls from our side will be notified that it’s Delhi Police to help gain people’s trust. We’ve collaborated in view of recent impersonation cases.”

Advantages of the Agreement

Truecaller’s new identification mark for police officers helps users distinguish between legitimate authorities and crooks impersonating cops. This partnership would also aid in creating digital literacy and training Delhi Law enforcement officers against cybercrime, according to Singh.

According to Outlook India, Pragya Misra, director of public affairs at Truecaller, said, “Through our collaboration with Delhi Police, we want to able to tackle impersonation…you will see now if any Delhi Police representative calls you there will be green badge or blue tick so that when you receiving the call as a citizen you will know that you are talking to police office no body impersonating you as leading to frauds.”

Moreover, Delhi Police can provide Truecaller with the contact information and names of offenders who have been the subject of harassment, scam, or other similar complaints, so that the phone ID verification platform can warn its customers about potential scams or harassment.

About Truecaller

Truecaller is a mobile application that provides caller identification and call-blocking services. It was developed by True Software Scandinavia AB, a Swedish company founded in 2009. The app is available for Android and iOS devices and has over 250 million active users worldwide.

The app uses an extensive database of phone numbers to identify incoming calls and messages. It also allows users to search for phone numbers and contact details of people or businesses. Truecaller can also block unwanted calls and messages and provides a list of numbers known as spam or telemarketing calls.

One of the unique features of Truecaller is the ability to identify unknown numbers, even if they are not saved in the user’s contacts. This feature is handy in identifying calls from telemarketers, scammers, and other unwanted callers. Truecaller also offers a premium version of the app, which provides additional features such as ad-free usage, the ability to see who viewed your profile, and the ability to send contact requests to people outside your network. However, there have been concerns regarding the privacy and security of Truecaller users, as the app collects any personal information, including phone numbers, names, and other contact details.
