The Steelman of India is Jamshed Jiji Irani, 86 years old and former Tata Steel managing director. He is responsible for the “reinvention” of Tata Steel, which became the low-cost steel producer in the world in the phase of modern globalization. He died on 31 October night in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

About Jamshed Jiji Irani

Jamshed Jiji Irani was a philanthropic Indian industrialist. He belonged to the influential Parsi community. He has a wife named Daisy Irani and three children: Zubin, Niloufer, and Tanaaz.

  • In 1956, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Science College in Nagpur, and in 1958, and received a Master of Science in Geology from Nagpur University. Further studied metallurgy and joined the British Iron and Steel Research Association.
  • In 2007 he joined Tata Steel and took his retirement at the post of Director.
  • It is said that he lacked to keep the company within the flow.
  •  Being the managing Director of Tata Steel, he lacked vision. He ensured that Jamshedpur’s election for Russi Mody, his godfather, was lost. Later, he served on the boards of other Tata Group firms and organizations. 
  • He received promotions in 1978 to general superintendent, in 1979 to general manager, in 1985 to president, in 1992 to managing Director, and in 1998 to Director. 2001 saw his departure from Tata Steel.
  • Jamshed Jiji Irani retired in 2007 and completed glorious years of service of 43 years.
  • Because of JJ Irani, Ashok Bhalotia, a former president of the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry, one of the oldest business organizations which speaks for nearly 600 MSMEs, Jamshedpur and the surrounding districts are a hub for ancillary businesses that support Tata Steel and Tata Motors, the two industrial behemoths based in Jamshedpur.

Additionally, Queen Elizabeth II awarded Jamshed Jiji Irani an honorary knighthood in 1997 for his achievements in bilateral commerce and cooperation between Britain and India. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007. Business executives in Jharkhand, particularly in Jamshedpur, where Irani spent most of his working life and elsewhere, are also remembered for his capacity to assist regional enterprises to flourish as supplementary units.
