Uttar Pradesh Gets The Opportunity To Host Khelo India National University Games In 2023-24

The top 1,000 children will receive an annual scholarship worth 5 lakh (US$6,300) over eight years to prepare them for international sporting events.

Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), formerly Khelo India School Games (KISG), are yearly multidisciplinary grassroots games held at the national level in India for two categories: under-17-year-old school students and under-21-year-old college students. They are held in January or February. The top 1,000 children will receive an annual scholarship worth 5 lakh (US$6,300) over eight years to prepare them for international sporting events.

The Training of Trainers (TOT) Program’s first phase occurred in December 2018 and January 2019. A total of 160 trainers will receive training in 4 groups of 40 during December and January. To include all interested teachers, administrators, vice-principals, and physical education instructors, this TOT Program will be conducted every six months or four times a year.

Who will host the Khelo India Games 2023?

The third iteration of the Khelo India University Games will take place in Uttar Pradesh in 2023. Nearly 6000 athletes from across the nation are anticipated to compete in the multi-discipline event, with Lucknow as its primary host city. The competition will include around 20 disciplines. Additional locations like Varanasi and Gautam Buddh Nagar might be used if the number rises. 

The multi-discipline event’s first iteration took place in Odisha in 2020, while the second iteration was conducted in Karnataka earlier this year. The planning for the multi-sport event has already begun, according to Navneet Sehgal, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, for Uttar Pradesh, saying as per The Hindu, “We are excited to host the Khelo India University Games next year. The vision that our Hon. PM Narendra Modi Ji and our Hon. CM Shri Yogi Adityanath Ji has for promoting sports throughout the nation at all levels and encouraging maximum youth participation is aligned with Uttar Pradesh sports.” 

The games will take place around the state so that more universities in different cities have the chance to host this grandiose event. According to the additional chief secretary for sports Navneet Sehgal, nearly 4,500 athletes representing 150 colleges from throughout the nation will compete for top honours in 20 disciplines. Uttar Pradesh would be the first state to hold the National University Games after Odisha and Karnataka.

As per the preferences put up during a session between Khelo India representatives and Uttar Pradesh government representatives, games like kabaddi, judo, archery, and fencing would be held in Noida, while rowing would take place in Gorakhpur. In Varanasi, some games such as wrestling, yoga asana competitions, and malkham will take place, while the hanging around contests will be hosted in Lucknow. Athletes under the age of 26 will compete in the National University Games. The tournaments for females will be allotted precise concentration.

According to Sehgal, the participants participating in the competition would receive top-notch facilities. The administration also declared openly the hiring of 12 retired athletes who made a reputation for themselves at the global tier as coaches for the state government-run sports dormitories in varied domains. About 38 more foreign athletes will be employed as trainers for 16 various sports in 44 living hostels.
