****

Get ready, take deep breaths, catch a good night’s sleep, and try and keep your blood pressure from going north or south, based on your expectations, for tomorrow is Judgement Day.

May 23 is not a day of the politicians; it’s your day, YOU, the voter. You decided and voted for the person/party you wish to see lead the country for the next five years, and now it’s time to find whether others shared your views or not.

The world’s largest festival of democracy shall celebrate its biggest day tomorrow, and everyone is invited. The world will be watching as India begins to count the votes one by one, and like any final match of any competition, there will be a winner and a loser. It doesn’t matter which side of the pick you are on. It’s having faith in the process and accepting the results sportingly. That is what is expected of us citizens.

The Election Commission of India has made stringent arrangements to ensure a free and fair counting process, Though there has been a lot of criticism coming from opposition parties, the process is all set to begin early tomorrow morning as planned.

The opposition parties remain critical nonetheless. Leaders of 21 parties collectively approached the EC’s office demanding to count the five sample VVPATs ahead of the counting process rather than at the end, as planned. The

EC office responded they would once again discuss the matter internally and announce their decision. Today, the EC rejected the opposition demand, and counting will resume as per the laid down procedure.

Meanwhile, opposition parties are not taking any chances. Most have parked their representatives near the various strong rooms where the EVMs are kept and where the counting will take place.

How the EVMs are secured and kept safe

The Election Commission has extensive and elaborate security measures in place for transporting and storing of EVMs and VVPATs. There is a central 24-hour EVM control room set up at the EC headquarters which receives complaints relating to strongroom security, transport of EVMs, polling agent complaints, etc.

The EVMs and VVPATs are first brought to voting centres in various vehicles. This may include trucks, tempos, vans or any other vehicle, as designated by the EC’s office. Such vehicles are accompanied by the presiding officer and Central Armed Police Forces. The entire process is the responsibility of the district election officer. All movement is carried out under his direction and order.

Security arrangements during movement of the EVMs and VVPATs are covered by body cameras worn by accompanying personnel. Additionally, drone-based cameras providing aerial observation and GPS and GIS-based vehicles are deployed for movement tracking.

At each voting centre, after polling is completed, every EVM is placed in the box in which it arrived. It is sealed in the presence of polling agents of various parties, polling officials, and the presiding officer. The VVPATs do not require a box as they are built within the box.

They are then transported under security cover as described above to designated strong rooms and stored. Each strongroom door and windows are sealed in the presence of officials and polling agents. The room is then kept under 24-hour security watch by a team of armed security personnel.

On counting day, they are moved to respective counting locations where the sealed EVMs and VVPATs are placed, and seals are broken in the presence of polling agents, officials, and the district election officer.

We will be extensively covering the election results on May 23, 2019. So, keep watching this space for 2019 General Election Results updates tomorrow.
