About Jazbaa

Anticipation of the fans of Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has got over, as she makes a comeback to the silver screen after five long years with Jazbaa. The remake of a South Korean movie Seven Days, Jazbaa is directed by Sanjay Gupta, who is known for his action thriller movies like Aatish: Feel the Fire and Kaante. Aishwarya chose to make her comeback under a director who has been earlier involved in many controversies. Let us see if taking-up Jazbaa was a right decision made by her or not. Plot Sanaya (Sara Arjun), daughter of advocate Anuradha Verma (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) gets abducted. Anuradha gets an unknown call which instructs her to fight a case for Miyaaz Shaikh (Chandan Roy Sanyal), who is charged with rape and murder of a young woman, Sia (Priya Banerjee). Anuradha’s school time friend, Yohaan (Irrfan Khan), is a suspended officer charged with corruption. The corrupt cop helps his friend, who is also his secret love interest, to get her daughter back and solve the mystery behind the kidnapping and also Sia’s murder.

Performances

Aishwarya has chosen the right role for a comeback as she plays the role of a single mother. Even after taking a long break from Bollywood, she has given a powerful performance in the movie. She was sincere in her role and intense in her performance except for few scenes where she looks over dramatic. However, one can easily neglect those portions when the actor has given a powerful performance. She maintained a  perfect balance by looking beautiful throughout the movie while playing the role of a grieving mother. Sometimes words are not enough to express the kind of quality and intensity delivered in a performance by an actor like Irrfan Khan. Like any of his other films, in Jazbaa too, he was at his best. In some scenes, the typical filmy or over dramatic dialogues appear funny only because they are delivered by Irrfan in his own style. Shabana Azmi, who plays the role of another grieving mother and a victim’s mother, has played a good supporting role. Her role is full of different shades which are discovered as the film proceeds. Jackie Shroff, who plays a cameo donning the role of a wealthy politician, brings a little thrill for the audience. Siddhant Kapoor, appears on screen in very few scenes and has done a fairly good job. Atul Kulkarni as a prosecutor has also done a good job as a supporting actor. If, director Sanjay Gupta would have worked a little hard on more detailing, he might have been able to make it a big hit. He cannot take points for the story as it is a remake of another film.

Jazbaa Music

In a thriller movie, one does not expect many songs. Likewise, there are not many songs in the music album of Jazbaa. ‘Bandeya’, which was also the first song to be released, is a soulful track. It is available in two versions – male and female, in the album. Director Sanjay Gupta, like his previous projects, has added an item number ‘Aaj Raat ka Scene’, which has already gained popularity and is being repeatedly played by radio stations. Interestingly, the full version of these songs is not there in the movie, but only a few lines of the beginning of the songs appear.

Details of songs in the movie:

1. “Bandeyaa” Music: Amjad-Nadeem Singer: Jubin Nautiyal Duration: 04:43 2. “Aaj Raat ka Scene” Music: Badshah Singer: Badshan and Shraddha Pandit Duration: 03:30 3. “Kahaaniya” Music: Arko Singer: Nilofer Wani and Arko Duration: 04:03 4. “Jaane Tere Shehar” Music: Arko Singer: Vipin Anneja Duration: 03:39 5. “Bandeyaa (Reprise)” Music: Amjad-Nadeem Singer: Asees Kaur Duration: 04:19

What’s Good?

The performances by all the actors deserve applause. Getting a supporting cast with veterans like Shabana Azmi and Jackie Shroff is highly commendable. Due to the thrill and suspense elements, the movie holds your attention, especially in the second half.

What’s Bad?

The movie is really fast-paced; it suddenly stumbles upon from one scene to the other, which at times, does not give enough time to fully understand the previous scene. Also, the dialogues are highly melodramatic and over the top, a loophole which could have been better worked upon by the makers. Some of such dialogues are “Neend mehbooba ki tarah hoti hai, waqt na do to naraz ho jati jai” and Mohabbat hai isi liye jane diya. Zidd hoti toh bahon mein hoti'. Verdict: It is worth watching, especially for the spectacular performances of all the actors!
